Windows 11 - love or hate it.

I hate the interface. You have to do more clicks to do the same stuff you want to do. Another big downgrade of Windows 11 is that it has NO WAY of terminating a process. Occasionally Firefox crashes. And when it does, You can't terminate the process no matter what. No task manager no third party app can kill a process that hangs on Windows 11. You have to restart. And that never happened to me on XP. On XP if a process hangs or crashes you can kill it via task manager. End process on Windows 11 is just for decoration. It doesn't do a thing.

It works (kind of) for me, has a 30% chance to close with task manager. If it doesn't, I get muscle memory from my time playing Minecraft 1.8 and hit the app with 30 CPS. It just can't bear the unholy amount of clicks, freezes, then crashes. Or I just spam Alt+F4. Still, not the friendliest way to close an app...

HaHA!... No I will not blame anything upon 'technology' as long as I can still choose what tech I wanna use which is mostly retro since I really don't care about the internet or how it's 'steering' users... Offline I can be my own king...

But others are with me apparently... Here's Peshay Studio Set (1996) with nothing to see but old Bryce 2 renders & music but uploaded 7 years ago has almost 4 million views & 148,000 likes... Good for them all!!

I started a thread over at the SunVox forum a bit over 2 years ago on a retro music tracker - AXS (ported from DOS to windows in 2001 given free) it is less than 460 KB full directory size does music good if you know music... I just captured the views-

AXS-Views.jpg

Will probably hit a million views by years end... Curious to have a look? Here's the GUI-

AXS.gif

Even has full manual right on the GUI, They just don't make 'em like that anymore...

Sound OK? I guess so if so many are using it... You can judge mine-

Latest - AXS Jazzmonger-

https://alonetone.com/TalkOrBell/tracks/axs-jazzmonger

Before that - Pulp Friction (alert there are some cuss words in this one, there's a back story to that)

https://alonetone.com/TalkOrBell/tracks/pulp-friction

A 30 second jingle - Kernel Klink-

The upshot is that retro tech is gaining speed & many are rejecting the new as they see 'through it'... I saw this coming decades ago so back then I collected everything I could get my hands on burning to disc for safe keeping... Now that almost nothing works on XP I don't collect anything anymore but I got a good 40 bins of stuff with a good 75% you can't find anywhere anymore...

OK a bit over the top for a reply but I do alot of screens-images so it's same-same for me...
Where could I download this software?

Alt F4 doesn't work for me on Windows 11. When a program crashes it just stays forever open. It won't let me close it no matter what.

You can easily bring up Task Manager in Windows 11 and kill a process.

There are a number of ways to change the look and feel of Windows 11. For example, Explorer Patcher + Open Shell Menu

I know how to open task manager. I think everyone here knows how to open task manager. What I said and I repeat is that End task or End Process just DOESN"T WORK AT ALL WHEN A PROCESS HAS CRASHED. I know I sound annoyed but it's because I am. And I haven't found a solution. Not even third party apps work. All you can do is restart. This never happen on older Windows versions.

For the looks I used startallback.

I don't know why that is such a big deal. If that happens then just reboot the computer. If Windows doesn't respond then hit the reset button. After all that is what it is for.

I have been using Windows since 1993. Every version of Windows crashes from time to time. i found Windows 10 and 11 much more stable than Windows XP.

Here never a problem with XP, On it right now... Did have a Dell 5555 with windows 10 that was given to me by a neighbor who I did favors for some years ago... Since it had a terrabyte HDD I stored alot of stuff on it & did alot or burning... It WAS pretty dependable & reliable but I had NEVER attached to internet even though it yearned for it...

Then Wife's computer was going south & she needed something better so I gave it to her... Man once hooked to internet the problems came rolling in, settings changed all the time, HDD got wasted very quickly, basically aspects of the OS were just taken over turning updates off did nothing....

Having about 14 XP machines I only have this one that hooks the internet... A Lenovo R500 ThinkPad but still, no problems...

Learning on previous I do have an ASUS transformer with windows 10 from same neighbor & it will certainly NEVER see the internet, works quite well but really only use in power outages as the battery lasts 7-9 hrs....

That sounds terrible, shoot windows 98 sounds like a better option to windows 11...

Sometimes when a MIDI app crashes my virtual MIDI ports get feedback which requires a restart but that's rare & specific...

You tried 'SuperF4'?

https://stefansundin.github.io/superf4/
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it.

@MisterEd
The thing is that my last main OS was Windows XP 64. That never happens there. It also doesn't happen on Windows 7 or 8.1. Haven't used Windows 10 for long to test there. I shouldn't need to restart the OS if a single application crashes. I should be able to close it with out restarting.

Where could I download this software?
Sorry, Did not see your posting till now...

For AXS the original wayback download is here-

https://web.archive.org/web/20030527131006/http://www.resolutionaudio.nl/

On the left bar there's 'blurry' links with one saying 'FILES' choose that link & all will be seen...

For MY upload there's an associate that has uploaded my 'Full Pack' which has starter song templates, Skins I have made, Tutorial GIFs & images, my special synth bank (presets different from original), some of my song files & all the old ones, charts, ETC even a short 'How to Render to WAV' video>>>>>>

Here-

https://archive.org/download/TalkOrBell-Audio-Software-Archive/AXS-FullPack.rar

Will soon be updating that pack... Mostly with SpaceToad stuff which is an app I use to allow proper MIDI Keyboard use in AXS but AXS does fine using QWERTY, All my songs so far have been QWERTY input...

If needing more information you can visit my thread -

https://warmplace.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6350

All image tutorials there are included in the 'Full Pack'... Looks like I am over 921, 000 views now... I know... WEIRD!

in my Music/Mods folder has 2,296 IT, MOD, S3M, and XM files. My favorite is Aryx.s3m and I hear the collection while playing DXBall2.

in my Music/MIDI folder I have 542 of popular songs, plus another 127 of descent, doom1+2, duke nukem 3d, heretic, hocus pocus, hexen, and Rise Of The Triad game music.
My mixer is VirtualMIDISynth and I like to load either the AWE32 soundfont from my 486 ISA days, or Chorium or WeedsGM for modern high quality reproduction.

Glad to see another here that listens to tracker modules... Some great stuff was made then (also some garbage) but much better ratio then as machines were grim & FX was very minimal thusly so the MUSIC had to pull the tune through... Nowadays they mostly string together soundFX & often in a bad way with a fat sound & infant lullaby, desktop dabblers getting lazier by the year on that one...

But I see you have game music which is also very good stuff...

Downloaded both! Thank you! Forgot to post earlier, so here are my thanks!

Thanks for confirming I know you have been busy & traveling...

If you get stuck on anything in AXS let me know... I enjoy the confidence of a crash-free program when I use it... It will accept any 16 or 24 bit mono or stereo WAV of any size for the sampler... You can have up to 7 instances of the internal multi-timbral synth each with it's own preset & any of those can be either mono or poly...

It should sound good if it is scratchy make sure nothing else running is sharing same audio driver but you can change that in settings to a different one...
