Slow Ethernet connection

Hello. I'm using XP Home SP3. Internet is via Ethernet using the standard MS 1394 Net Adapter and a Reaktek RTL8139 PCI Fast NIC, configured for automatic negotiation. Other network/internet configuration values are normal to my knowledge. My provider-supplied modem/router is delivering full specs: 220 Mbps down and 115 up, 8ms ping (The switching station is just down the street).

My main Windows 11 PC gets full speed from the same modem, so the problem is not the modem/router. But the best average performance on my XP machine is about 40/28 Mbps. My XP drivers are updated and working normally. The Ethernet cable is a cat-6.

I've searched the internet for suggestions and tips about improving XP internet speed. I've tried the ones I understood, but there is no significant improvement. This includes switching from auto to manual (100 full duplex) speed configuration on the NIC.

Any idea from this group much appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

MS 1394 Net Adapter is Firewire, so I doubt you have a Cat 6 plugged into that.

The Realtek RTL8139 PCI Fast NIC is capable of about 10 to 11 megabytes per second top whack. You are getting half that at about 4.7 megabytes per second. You are using an old card.

If you are bothered by the speed, get a Gigabit Network a PCI, or if your board has one spare a PCIE slot. You can find them for £5 on ebay. Install drivers to suit. Get a good brand with XP drivers. You are spoilt for choice.

While reading about your problem, I found a user suggesting to switch to 100 Full Duplex, 10 Mbps Max Link Speed. You can usually do this through the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel – look for the NIC settings.

Hope this helps!

Are you an IA running on an old 486 Marcin? Is that why you and your brother spam the site? Or is it just to build up enough likes and comments even on threads that are years old, so that you can push your virus software? The entire reason you joined the site.

You certainly don’t bother ever reading peoples posts. Or helping people in any meaningful way. Other than as a whimsical reminisce about pre - Windows 95 software.

Sync45 explained that he had tried switching to (100 full duplex).

Do you understand anything about computer hardware Marcin?

Thanks very much for your response. The cat-6 is plugged into the Realtek NIC, not the 1394. BTW, I have tried other cables (new 5e's) and there's no change. I did download and install a driver update for the Realtek 8139. It may be my imagination, but there seems to have been a slight improvement in the speed, but nothing dramatic. I tried both auto negotiation and 100 full duplex again, but also no significant improvement in speed. It's weird: A Via 400 Mbps fast internet adapter is also installed in the old XP. It shows as working normally, but is otherwise dead. Absolutely no reaction when I plug into it, except a message saying that a network cable for that connection is unplugged. Short of getting a new card, there seems to be nothing more to do. I thought there might be a few easy tweaks that would speed things up. But that bag of tricks seems to be empty. But to be pragmatic, I don't really need a fast internet connection for the XP, since it is dedicated for a non-internet purpose. It was just an idea that faster internet would have been nice to have. But really, my W-11 up to date PC is all I need for that.

1. Missed his mention of Duplex. When it comes to XP HARDWARE, I use knowledge from older forums, as I have never used an actual Windows XP machine nor repaired one. Pretty harsh to judge my lAcK oF kNoWlEdGe based off one mistake. Have only interacted with Windows 7+ hardware when it comes to internal components. I am not an IA with a legacy machine. Sorry for misunderstanding the thread and giving advice that was useless to the user, reported my message in hope that Clippy deletes it.

When it comes to "not reading peoples posts. Or helping people in any meaningful way" - just ask Covo about his browsing experience after I helped him with his browser issues or YC96 with XP customization and his Media Player errors, or see how happy Xperceniol was about ramCheck (which I sent him), Belicosebloke appreciating my feedback on the software he shares and Chiron appreciating WLEdit. Given these examples (and more to come), I think your remark was unnecessarily mean and at least a bit subjective. If you don't want me on this forum, I can delete my account. Just ask! If that is what you wish, say it directly...

2. Haven't mentioned my antivirus on this forum outside of the dedicated thread. Even though it is open-source and I get nothing from it, I do not mention it outside of the dedicated thread and DMs of people passionate about it.

As I have mentioned before, Sentinel XP is not the reason I joined. I came here to help XP users in any way I can (mostly software-related). I also tried here, with hardware, but I'll keep my nose out the next time I see something new in Hardware, as I think reading old forums isn't enough knowledge to help with hardware. When it comes to software, though, users have appreciated the things I shared (especially YC69), or my help (like Covo with his weird browser issue) and the other examples given above. My first posts don't even mention it and I do not write about it outside of the dedicated thread. Here is one of my first posts:

I did not intend to be a spammer, just to help out as many people as I can in XP-related errors. I overlooked the last line that this person wrote ad now won't stick my "spammy hands" into the Hardware section. In the future, please be less mean when it comes to correcting mistakes. Please do not bring out false accusations before you verify them.

3. On the music box thread from January, the guy seemed really passionate, so I wanted to help him, as he clearly misunderstood some things (like saying the interface is coded in SQL, which is impossible). Replying to older threads (like the one about forgotten password) helps people in the future, like I used the mentions of software on older forums to help users like YC69. Proof below:
Likes do not matter on this forum, as there is no points system and no way to view total number of likes received.

4. If I'm a spammer, notify Clippybeer and have me banned. I will not resist nor be mean in any way, will not DDoS the forum or anything of that type. If I am a spammer, report all of my spam messages and probably notify other members, etc. That is what I would do if somebody was spamming. I am not daring you, if you really feel threatened by me, I can delete all of my messages and my account. Maybe I'll start my own forum for Sentinel XP if that happens. Don't feel constrained - fell free to tell me if that is the case!

Seeing people's happy reactions and thankfullness (YC69, Covo, xperceniol, belicosebloke, Chiron), I think some people were helped by me in a way that was at least a bit meaningful.

Reported the earlier message, you can do the same. If there was a delete option, I would have deleted it. Once again, if you feel threathened/want me to delete my account, just drop that info below!

Hi Sync45

The speed you are obtaining from the Realtek RTL8139 is perfectly normal. I have seen hundreds of XP machines with these types of cards in. They all get about that speed. Go for a cheap 1Gbit card. You will see a dramatic improvement.

Even with a 1Gbit card, you are unlikely to get Windows 10/11 speeds over it.

I get 115 megabytes per second on my 1 Gbit card on Windows10 machines, but on my 1 Gbit card on XP machine I am lucky to get 35 megabytes per second.

You are unlikely to get top end speed, without a lot of work.

Please Note (For Windows XP) that my top rate of 35 megabytes per second on a 1 Gbit card is almost exactly 10 times your rate on a 100Mbit card. Just as one would expect.

There is a chap … Secpar on these forums, who has spent hundreds of dollars trying to get ultra-high speed on a 10Gbit network with windows XP. Its hard work going for gold.

https://www.xpforums.com/threads/10gb-ethernet-card.934281/

This should clear up the questions you have been pondering.

Unfortunately, I can’t write it in Crayon for you. You do not read peoples posts. Either that, or you are deliberately trying to mislead people and harm their online safety.

I made it clear to you that Mike Siegal 1 is a predator and a thief, who went to prison for stealing the lifesaving off an elderly couple. I explained that when he showed up on our forum that I handled it diplomatically.

So, what do you Marcin?

You instantly message him offering him help on his non-existent QSONIX Q205. That he has touted round numerous websites and forums trying to get victims to hand over their email and address. For the last 15 years the only time he was not able to do that was when he was in prison.

mikesiegel1 is predator who targeted this site because he realised there would be a large group of computer illiterate people who really didn’t understand computers on here and either wanted help, or were trying to be helpful.

I am not really bothered by your fan club, if you are just an idiot. But You do have some programming knowledge, even though you spend the majority of your life playing on line games. The problem being one doesn’t need to be a genius to take people for a ride.

And the site has become suspiciously active with a vast amount of activity. Virtually none of it helping people with XP related issues.

Yes, I have noted xperceniol (The man who congratulated me in Private post for my husband having cancer), belicosebloke (The Member of the First Nations, who likes to describe himself, as a Native American, but has a colloquial UK English handle) and Chiron the 80 year old Physicist in Bavaria, who also writes in English with UK English phrases.

But mostly I have noticed you, like I noticed Mike Siegal and so I researched because I am able to use a computer.

Happy that you have all found each other. However, when you start replying to genuine people who visit the forum, with genuine questions, perhaps hold off spewing words on the page, if you haven’t got a clue what you are writing about.

I only notify Clippybeer when someone is a complete pain. The same as I used to notify Ian before. You do not have the capacity to make me feel threatened, you just irritate me. You are a bit of a silly crybully. Now go away.

Being thankful to someone does not mean being someone's fan.

Glad you stayed "objective": "you are just an idiot", "You are a bit of a silly crybully". Understood that little hint, I am not a predator - did not notice that Siegal was the one you told me about earlier, thought he was a genuine guy. "Now go away" - was that a confirmation I should delete my account and leave the forum?
Also, in my culture calling someone an idiot due to one small mistake would be seen as unnecessarily harsh. If you want to really judge me, dig up something from my 200 other posts, don't use my first post in this thread as the spear tip of calling me some evil idiot spammer.

"perhaps hold off spewing words on the page, if you haven’t got a clue what you are writing about." - I already apologised for the hardware mistake, don't need to piggy bank off it THAT hard, promised I won't talk in Hardware again.

"even though you spend the majority of your life playing on line games" - That is just a miscalculation. I haven't played a game for over a month now, used to play them around 3 hours per week. I know you saw my YouTube channel - these are all just scheduled videos, the 10 hour compilations were just old videos compiled together. Proof in screenshot. Thanks for notifying me though! Through scheduling videos I wanted to create the illusion that I am uploading every day, when in reality I can take a break from recording anytime until early October.

"I have noted xperceniol (The man who congratulated me in Private post for my husband having cancer), belicosebloke (The Member of the First Nations, who likes to describe himself, as a Native American, but has a colloquial UK English handle) and Chiron the 80 year old Physicist in Bavaria, who also writes in English with UK English phrases." - maybe they are from the UK, who knows? The way they write does not mean that they're either stupid, smart or lying, nor does it undermine their passion for XP.

"And the site has become suspiciously active with a vast amount of activity. I logged in today and saw 10 messages - was it just my doppelganger pursuing his evil schemes or is this forum not dead like many others? If I were the admin of this forum, I'd be happy that it is alive. Subjective opinion though...

Thanks for the further advice. In a way it's reassuring. Tests with a couple of speed checkers that still work with XP indicate about 40 down/28 up now. I guess I should be happy and satisfied. It's really all I need for any internet-related work with the XP machine, which is practically nothing. I am still puzzled why the Via NIC is dead, despite being described by XP as "working properly". It obviously isn't. :)

. . . and Chiron the 80 year old Physicist in Bavaria, who also writes in English with UK English phrases.
Guilty as charged, Your Honour, on all accounts:
- Yes, I'm 80 - not by my choice of course, but all my documents seem to agree on that. Which makes me highly suspect: I shouldn't have signed that infamous deal with Satan.
- Yes, no one is perfect, I admit to being a physicist. Which among other things makes me a potential complicit in the nuclear threat looming on the world, even though astrophysics has precious little to do with nuclear fission.
- Yes, here I write in English because it's the forum language, and occasionally I use some typical UK phrases for I prefer them over the equivalent US ones.
- And yes, I live in Bavaria, where I read and speak German because that's the way of the people here. Even more shameful, neither of them is my mother tongue - that I won't disclose as it could be used to incriminate me.

Sorry Madeleine, initially I wanted to stay out of the brawl but then you saw fit to drag me in by name and personal data, and chickening away would be cowardly.
I have very little to add. Perhaps just reminding you that in a civilized country if you have good reason to believe that someone is a murderer, you don't shoot him in the head: you rather run to the nearest police station and there you produce your evidence and your conclusions - calmly.
Getting emotional and shouting blunt insults won't strengthen your arguments, it will weaken them mightily by lowering them to the level of a marital quarrel. And it will spread around an unpleasant smell of animosity and hostility that the other forum members will hardly enjoy.
Bear in mind that insults may be forgiven but very seldom forgotten.

As for me, I think I'm going to take a long vacation until that smell fades away.

Take me off the list of Contributors on Your Github Page for XP Sentinel Development. I have never offered any contribution to this software and I don’t want my name being associated with it, or you. I have never given you permission to use my name. The link you give for me - goes straight to my bio page, which lists my career, Magdalen College, Oxford; And The University of Manchester, School of Chemistry. This will give people the false impression that I support your software.

You have 48 hours. If you do not remove my name, I will contact my university and have you removed from GitHub.

Let me remind you “Professor” what facts are. Something that is proved to be true; Either by empirical evidence, experimentation or testimony.

Martingonn. Written testimony: “When it comes to XP HARDWARE, I use knowledge from older forums, as I have never used an actual Windows XP machine nor repaired one.”

Martingonn. Proved facts: Joined this site within 24 hours of setting up XP Sentinel Development on Github.

Mike Siegal. Proved facts: A convicted felon who stole the life savings from an elderly couple. Spent over a decade trawling websites trying to find victims with pictures he got from the web of computer hardware that he doesn’t own.

https://www.nj.com/essex/2019/09/br...th-phony-investments-sentenced-to-prison.html

I suggest sticking to facts, rather than hysterical wild conjecture and false statements, such as: “you saw fit to drag me in by name and personal data”

What name? What personal data? Never heard of you. I can be contacted at the university I list in my Bio, by just enquiring about Dr Takam. I can be found on the lists of alumni from Magdalen College. You are anonymous and could be anyone.

I would keep away from the “in a Civilised Country” insults, that you have been desperate to use. Adolf Hitler and Josef Fritzl are the two most famous citizens of the “Civilised Country” of Austria.

Unlike you “Professor” I have a name and a history in Science and don’t want my name falsely used to promote someone’s “Antivirus” software.

Funny isn’t it that he didn’t list you without your permission to bolster the authenticity of his software. Oh yeah, that’s why, it wouldn’t bolster it– you are anonymous, so would have no point.

https://github.com/Martingonn/SentinelXP/tree/main

Finally. I take note of your sentence: “Bear in mind that insults may be forgiven but very seldom forgotten.”

I’m different. I don’t forgive insults. I have worked in a “Civilised Country” for 40 years paying taxes.

White Country is what you really meant to say. But will constantly deny, just like the coward Josep Borrell Vice-President of the European Commission, who referred to non-white countries as the Jungle.

That time is over. The millions in Africa that the Europeans murdered and the countries they stole from and exploited are rising fast. The fastest growing economies in history.

If there is anything you feel like squealing about like a little girl, feel free to contact my university and complain. You won’t be able to do that anonymously. Lets see what happens then, shall we?
