where are device drivers???

I have a refurbished dell dimension 5150 desktop.
3.00GHz, Win XP Home, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, Pentium 4 microprocessor.

The system was functioning adequately, including Internet access with wireless network. But was sluggish. It had also previously experienced viral difficulties in the past.

I decided to backup, then wipe the hard drive using dban nuke. All seemed to go as expected.

Attempted reinstall of Win XP os, using provided ms disk, which seemed to be successful except:
-Product key was not requested
-Drivers were not loaded. I tried the application and driver recovery disk, to no avail.
-Device Manager indicated the following drivers were missing:
WLAN adapter
Audio device on HD audio bus
Ethernet controller
Multimedia video controller
SM bus controller
Video controller
Video controller (VGA compatible)

DVD functioned normally, of course. Since I have no Internet access on this computer, cannot download drivers. But why were drivers present previously not reinstalled from driver recovery disk?
Must I download drivers using this computer and burn to disk for installation? Why?

Any input would be appreciated.:)

go here and enter the express service code on side of tower or under laptop, this will get you to the driver download page for your dell.

when xp has been reinstalled several times it seems that the system was recognized and no product key was necessary, just my opinion, as I have not needed to input my product key for the last 3 reinstalls,

I never use the resource cd from dell, has a lot of bloatware, I always get the drivers I need downloaded to a flash drive or you can burn them to a cd, and then install on my pc.

if you still need other drivers and they are not listed in device manager, we can try to find them

the drivers from the resource cd are definitely outdated. and your cd is probably only at sp2, and needs to be at sp3, which has to be installed manually as windows updates will not work with sp2

sp3 for network?

Thanx for your prompt reply.

The website you mentioned concerns sp3 for a network. I wish to install drivers/software on this one computer.
It is stated that a smaller file is available for single install, but I have been unable to access it.

Can I use the network install anyway?:)

I have been unable to access Windows Update page.

I am at present using my Win 7 computer, since 5150 has no internet access.

Install sp3 manually, ignore it not being for a single pc, windows updates will not work without sp3,

go to start, run, type in msinfo32 and click ok, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All (Ctrl-A), Copy (Ctrl-C) and then paste (Ctrl-V) the information back here in your next reply.
You can edit out any personal information.

while in this box, expand components, expand network, select adaptor and copy/paste that info also, then I can look up on the manufacturers website for the driver. (this is your internet connection) which should be listed on the dell driver page for your pc

more data

I successfully installed video driver, Intellipoint 8.2 mouse software, SP3 from Dell website. After SP3 install, screen display changed somewhat-slightly fuzzy; certain this can be adjusted later.
When attempted to install NEC dvd rw drive, message' Target NEC ND-3530A is not found correctly'. Since this drive was used for os reinstall, I am assuming that this info is not critical. :(

As to the info you requested:

In addition, info I have on the router:
-Network name (SSID) Apple Network
-802.11n
-key 04056cc225ae427aae189b1557

As mentioned previously, this computer connected to the wireless network automatically after USB adapter (Belkin) was inserted. I have downloaded the IE8 install program. I feel that Internet connection is my next priority. I probably need a driver for the Dell NIC?? Also possible BIOS update.

Thanx again for your input. :D

Contentment is having a second desktop with Internet connection.

Bye for now. :)

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19428402.aspx

read this,

did you read the users guide and manual from my previous link?

when you do a reinstall there is a certain order for the dell drivers to be installed:

ORDER FOR DELL INSTALL DRIVERS

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card
---------------------------

What did you mean the sp3 from the dell website?

it should have been sp3 from the microsoft website.

once you get sp3 installed, then there are approx 130 updates necessary at Microsoft updates.

---------

what is the make, model and model number of your cd drives they may need updating, you do not want to get hardware updates from Microsoft.

install all high priority updates and then do a custom scan and install any rootkit updates listed in the optional section.

do not install windows desktop search unless you really want to.

"read this,

-- I downloaded that list. I became impatient. It had not occurred to me that I would encounter this much difficulty obtaining device drivers which were previously present on this hd. In any case, this was intended to be a learning experience for me; it certainly has been that. I can easily reinstall win xp and proceed, once I have identified and found the drivers required.

ORDER FOR DELL INSTALL DRIVERS

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card
---------------------------
--Thus I must find at least 8 drivers, according to this list. Do not know names of pertinent files or where to find them. I accessed the Dell website so that I could use service tag number to obtain list of device drivers required and present before the hd wipe.

"What did you mean the sp3 from the dell website?

once you get sp3 installed, then there are approx 130 updates necessary at Microsoft updates."

--The Microsoft sp3 website was intent on selling me windows 8, which I do not want. Thus I looked elsewhere. Without Internet access, it will be difficult to obtain 130 updates.

---------

"what is the make, model and model number of your cd drives they may need updating, you do not want to get hardware updates from Microsoft."

--cd drive is not important at this time. However, NEC DVD NECNd353_v104c.zip yielded the message ' Target NEC ND-3530A is not found correctly'.

install all high priority updates and then do a custom scan and install any rootkit updates listed in the optional section.

do not install windows desktop search unless you really want to.

I thank you again for your patience with me.

CORRECTION!! In my confusion, mis-stated sp3 source. Actual download from Microsoft: WINXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe, 316.4MB. Also numbers of 4 articles concerning this software.

Apologies, again.

obtained

I have downloaded 1,4,5,6 from install order list.

Am now searching for other drivers, but do not know where or file names.

I have 3 files listed under 'network connection' on Dell website.

you could give me the express service code so I could look at the drivers, or just read the overview and install the one listed as either urgent or critical or recommended.

when you go to the dell website and type in your express service code, only those drivers that are for your system are listed.

under device manager, what type of product is listed under network adaptors?
that is the driver you are searching for.

chipset should be listed in the drivers for your system also.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/ServiceTag/8SS3491?s=BIZ

these are your drivers on this page what do you need to know?

I know you do not want to hear this but I would reinstall and then put the drivers in with the proper order.

I would not put in the Dell support center unless you want it.

The diagnostices is only viable if you have not formatted the drive and deleted the diagnostics partition.

Network: read the users guide and install the 2nd option which is the drivers

desktop software install this first

almost there

Thanx to your patient assistance I have downloaded the following files, listed in installation order:

1. R121089 Dell Desktop System
2. R114566 Intel Chipset
4. R126542 Chipset Family (Video)
5. R114282 Audio
6. IPx86_1033_8.2.468.0 Mouse/Keyboard
8. INPENUXP.cab Network Connection

I believe my microprocessor (3.) is a Nara 6, but have been unable to find data on this device, assuming this info is required. I assume modem driver (7.) is not required for a network connection.
:)

Uhmm..... Flummoxed.

I reinstalled win xp using the os disk "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for Ultra Cost PSs SP3". This went as expected.
Then, in error apparently (as you pointed out), I installed some of the driver files out of order mostly out of boredom, and assuming I could start over.
However, this time install was asking for win xp sp3 cd. I assumed this was because I had installed these files that sp3 was requested. I decided the safest thing to do was wipe the drive again (dban); this was successful (3 passes). Thus the hd should have been cleared of all data.
However, this time, using the above-mentioned os cd, I still get the request for the sp3 cd rom. Specifically, the message reads "File 'asms' on sp3 CD is needed". The drive shown in the window is d:/i386 the cd-rom.
This system will boot to windows, but asks again for the sp3 cd rom.

Why has this changed from the os install after the first wipe? How could there be significant data left on this drive now?

If I burn the sp3 file from my flash drive to a cd-rw, will that solve this problem? Copy is not sufficient. I guess this is the logical next step.
Would transfer to a floppy disk be of any advantage over cd rom?

Thanx again for your input. I feel as though I am getting closer to the solution. I have learned much from this experience.
:)

Where did you get this disk?

for Ultra Cost PSs SP3, should not be on a genuine installation cd.

you have to install sp3.

if you save the sp3 download to a flash drive, and then copy the sp3 to your desktop once xp is installed, then you would double click it to install sp3.

do not know why it is asking for the cd, you do not have to burn it to a cd but you can if you want to, either way it will install, I have always just installed from my desktop and flash drive, until I created a slipstreamed cd with sp3 on my oem disk
