I would like to use their default MS Sans Serif font (not Microsoft Sans Serif), in a graphics program.

It's the one they use on, for instance, a BSOD, or other warning screen.

It doesn't show up in PaintShop Pro or Serif Draw. It is listed in the Gimp, but it looks almost identical to Microsoft Sans Serif.

Is there a way I can invoke the font I want from the Windows Font folder or some other way of inserting it in graphics?

sans serif is not a font it is a typesetting

you would have to have a more specific font name for what you want, look at the search page below and see if you can find the font you want. Then if it is not in the xp font list we can see how to download it.

In my Windows Font folder there is a font called Microsoft Sans Serif (TrueType)
Its icon displays a large tilted oval, and its properties says MICROSS.TTF

A little further down in the folder is a font called MS Sans Serif 8,10,12, 14, 18, 24(VGA res)
Its icon displays a red A, and its properties says SSERIFE.FON (sic)

When a BSOD is displayed on my system, the font is at (http etc) i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd27/syncopator/font_zpsdec99214.gif~original

It is referred to at (http etc) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Sans_Serif

Yes, that command can and does show me what fonts are installed on my XP machine, but it reproduces the information which I also see in the Windows Fonts folder, so I don't see the point.

this program means nothing to me I'm afraid.

okay let's go a different way , what is the name of your graphics program??

then we can search for a way to import fonts to that particular program.

    from here

so you could use it to create the text from the sansserif font. (I think!)

    https://www.google.com/#q=download+ms+sans+serif+font

or you could just download it see the hits on the above search page.

    Also:

I downloaded this program and the font is MS Serif, not san serif

look at example 5 and you will see the same type as the chkdsk font. it helps to have the correct name to look for a download.

Yes, I've just done that. The font viewer I use displays a much more accurate image of the fonts than Nir Sofer's does.

This is a screenshot of my font viewer displaying both MS Serif and MS Sans Serif

And these three shots of the fonts in my Fonts folder

The graphics programs in which I would like to use the MS Sans Serif font are PaintShop Pro7 and Serif DrawPlus. I am not aware of a facility to import fonts in either of them, but I shall have another look.

And this is a link to the viwer I use

You have obviously spent some time investigating this for me, and I am very grateful.

I have read a lot of the information revealed in your links buy I'm afraid that I still can't get the font in which I am interested to show up in PaintShop Pro 7.

One good thing which has come out of this, though, is that I have now transferred many infrequently used fonts to their own folder.

I think I shall settle for a technique, which, although very slow, works to achieve desired results. That is to crop, copy, save etc, individual characters from a screenshot or on-line picture, and paste them into an image I am creating in either PaintShop Pro or Serif Draw.

in the article above it talks about the DPI changing the outcome of the font size, I am not that technically adept to understand it but you may. This may be why the font looks different upon importation.

    ALSO:

if you restart your pc and tap F8 (like you were going to safe mode) but instead click on Enable VGA, this will make your regular desktop big like safe mode, and then you should see the font as it would appear in the File checking dialog box.

then you should be able to use it in your program???

then you could go back and click on start windows normally.

    http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/aboutgraphics/a/fontoverload_3.htm

above link has fonts that should not be deleted, just in case you had moved the wrong ones

That is interesting, but, for the moment at least, I don't understand it either. I have copied the page so that I can easily refer to it again.

Sounds promising. I will look into that.

    Thank you.

    FONT MANAGEMENT: SP2 VS. SP3
    Adobe Type Manager 4.1

I have an old desktop PC with an AMD Athlon processor and KT3 Ultra2 motherboard running offline.

I was using the June 2006 student media version of Windows XP Pro with SP2, and I installed SP3, but had to keep reverting to the backup because WGA kept locking me out, without internet access.

But it worked well and I was able to install a huge number of fonts. i installed ATM 4.1, so I could get them working with QuarkXPress 5 and they worked with Microsoft Office Word 2003,too.

But, the WGA problems were so annoying and impossible to overcome without reverting to my Macrium backups. So, I installed the older 2002 version of Windows XP Pro and installed SP2 separately. I think SP2 uses slower USB controllers than SP3.

It was when I was about to install SP3, that I realized when reading the licence agreement that SP3 was probably the cause of all my WGA problems, so I never installed it this time. But that made we wonder about which updates I am now missing for crucial apps like MS Office 2003 and how that affects my fonts, since it's offline. More important, should I install ATM 4.1 again, before I install QuarkXPress, and which Windows XP and MS Office 2003 updates should I download from the Microsoft support site using Linux, so I can install them onto my old Athlon PC offline with a jump drive? May be if I do that, I won't need ATM 4.1.

@Samwise, the last time I ever reinstalled xp with sp2, many years ago, there were approx 200 High priority updates, You never want to go online without all the updates as they are all security patches up to april 2014.

I could not even begin to list them.

but you could go to Microsoft download center and select xp and any and all updates download them, and then select office 2003 and download those, and select .net if you have that installed and download all the updates for that also. :)

what is the error you are getting with wga and you should start your own thread so as not to confuse any instructions to the original poster.

WGA completely locks me out from booting up Windows XP, I think 30 days after the installation date. And resetting the date in AMIBIOS does not help, either. I tried seven different methods of disabling WGA and none of them worked. Part of the problem is that my Athlon PC cannot hook up to the Internet.
