Sure it would (at least a little), aero increases the work it has to do. System Restore is also a big one, Superfetch, somewhere on the internet there's lists of the most active built-in vista and 7 services. Have you tried the Windows Classic display theme to make it look like win2000? It's beautiful to old folk like us that appreciate simplicity.
Another area you could target is switching to SSD (or cheap Flash) to eliminate the spinning hard drive power requirement. Or just carry an extra battery pack like smartphone users.
