The workaround is to activate by phone. Have you tried that?

Already decided. I'm going to ring them tomorrow.

Thanks anyway to everyone who's chipped in to help.

That’s odd! I’ve been on the XP all evening. But am now on my iPad. And there are a couple of posts that haven’t appeared yet in my ‘downgrading’ thread.

And would you believe it? They suddenly turn up an hour or so later. Must be XP!

either you were posting at the same time I was on another thread, because your posting did not show up on the forum list, but did show up under new posts, :) One reason why I like to check under new posts/all recent posts, just to see if I missed one, :)

I wouldn't call MS, they are collecting information and not offering to help.

Wasn't that bad. Just a straightforward exchange of numbers.
    No 3rd degree!

great! now save the wpa.dbl and if it is there the wpa.bak files from c/windows/system32 to a flash drive or cd in case you ever have to reinstall again, which you just might have to from seeing your other post, on drive letter problems.

Ok! Here we go again! I’ve just reloaded my desktop with XP after finally re partitioning the SSD. And once again, all signs and indications show that the internet is working properly. 2 way traffic apparently is flowing normally. But it still stubbornly refuses to relinquish IE and allow me to select Google as my preferred site.
I am looking through previous posts to see if there’s anything that I’ve missed.

Slowly (possibly) getting there. But MSN is fighting with every dying breath! Now I am getting stupid security certificate warnings when I try to open Google!

Nope! Can’t get on to any websites. Keep getting blocked by a security certificate!

So. Does this mean I’ve picked up a virus? There were no green padlocks visible in front of http. And I now get the same result on two XP installed hard drives! I’ve never, ever had this problem before!

possibly because of IE, are you on ie8 and sp3? sp2 if 64bit.

if not you will have to download and install those from my ONEDRIVE, and also mypal or firefox 52.9.0ESR, to get online

as for a driver, another contributor suggested slim drivers for those that the manufacturers website is not offering xp drivers

Ok. Panicking a bit now! I’m on XP Pro 32bit. SP3. Not sure what version of IE though.
In the mean time I’ve reformatted and reinstalled XP on my SSD.
Not sure if I’m barking up the wrong tree here but I have disconnected WiFi which was up and running during the previous installation.

regardless of whether you can go online or not, you can check your version by opening IE and going to HELP , in menu bar and choosing ABOUT, this will tell you your version.
    -----------------------

clarify please, you can or cannot get online with this new installation on an ssd, either wirelessly or wired, correct??

I can get online. But I keep getting warned that EVERYTHING is suspect! I just tried to install the drivers for my graphics card, which happened to have Google Chrome and Google toolbar as an extra. Surely a trusted site from a trusted source. But no! They just kept getting blocked with security certificate notices.

please download ie8 and updates from my onedrive link in reply #34 to a flash drive from a completely working pc, then install to your pc.

    2. then since you say you have sp3 already installed, go to microsoft updates (from the link in start/all programs) and do a custom search to get fully updated

this should have been done before you ever went online

Tell you what! I’ve already done all that! I’ve been trying for 3 days now. With no success! Anyway. As a last resort, this afternoon I removed XP and reinstalled 8.1 just to see what would happen. And would you believe it? It not only connected to the internet immediately. But weirder still! My keyboard problem has mysteriously vanished! All keys are doing what they are supposed to!
I had XP working perfectly for a while. So maybe I shouldn’t have tinkered!
So I guess I’ll stick to 8.1. Needless to say. I am extremely grateful for all your patience and perseverance Elizabeth. And that goes to Windows XPforever also, for their contributions.
