there are tons of good xp install images that already have drivers integrated such as https://archive.org/details/XPTrueFasterV5-DVD
Archive Org also has many xp install discs that run Modern Installer: grants you additional options for drivers during setup, so you don't have to learn how to slipstream.
then there's www.driverpack.io which I've personally seen to never miss a driver in it's easy to use collections.

All these options are free, of course.

so i dl the xp from the link sent and although it gets further on (loads sata drivers etc) as soon as it says starting windows bsod

What is the STOP=0...... error code? And the BSOD is during setup, not after install where you could use Safe Mode, Logged Debug, etc? Even if you're in the setup portion, you could edit BOOT.INI to enable logging if you want to see exactly what it's hanging up on.

Tell us more about your system, is it configured for BIOS or UEFI, and is CSM enabled? It's SATA and not NVme? Hard Drive Controller is set to AHCI (SATA) or legacy/ATA/IDE compatibility mode?

The following video shows installing XP on UEFI without CSM, but I haven't attempted this feat (it's unlikely I'll ever use UEFI on my personal computers). There's also software called CSMwrap on GitHub. And www.easy2boot.xyz talks about booting any OS on UEFI. I've used E2B a lot, just not the UEFI function.

right i dont know what i changed last night before i gave up but i just booted the laptop and the install seems to be going ok so far (at the formatting C drive at minute)

but last night i got the bsod straight after it says setting up files at the bottom. unfortunately i never got the stop code.
but if anything happens now il post back.
if install goes well il post back

so after install has formatted, then loaded drivers/files etc come to reboot first time all i get is blank screen after reboot.
reboot again press f5 and see xp pr drive, press enter and still blank screen

Great to hear, congrats! If you ever want to utilize more than 4gb of RAM, or more than 2gb per program, there's XP 64-bit which is what I use. Yes, there are mods to use more than 4gb on XP32 but the ones I have tried seem to be less than 100% stable. Perhaps there's newer updates since I've tried them.

so im having trouble connecting to the internet. i had a file with all the drivers i need and installed everything. ive found my router but its never asked for passkey. it just says (for last hour) "aquiring network address".
any help appreciated guys

are you connecting with ethernet (cord) or wifi? are you able to view any wifi networks? in devmgmt.msc (Device Manager) it'll show the status of your network adapters, and any are missing they'll be under the yellow question mark "unknown" category
A corded ethernet connection won't need a password, and XP is known to get stuck on "acquiring network address" sometimes, it happens to me occassionally even while the connection is still working. You can try to unstick it with commands:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Keep in mind almost no websites will connect with built in Internet Explorer, you'll need to install a modern Gecko browser like Mypal, or try to make do with a decade old Firefox version 52.
You can also use a modern Webkit browser such as Thorium, or try to make do with a decade old Chrome version 49, but first you must download and install updated security certificates TLS 1.3 because HTTPS has moved on from the old certificates that come preloaded in XP. (Geckos use their own built-in certificates, while Webkits use the host OS' certificates.)

Now if anyone has set up advanced security on your router, it's possible it's not authorizing the XP computer an IP until you go into its' settings. You should still be able to connect via a static IP in XP's settings, unless again the router specifically blocks unknown MAC addresses.

For future reference, you can also use Universal NT Installer with their modernized XP version via USB. It worked on my Samsung R510 (UEFI + BIOS, intended for Vista) and it worked. After initial install, I installed the laptop's drivers.
