XP Home re-install cannot find serial ATA devices

MSI K9NBPM2-FID MB
2 WD 500G SATA Hard Drives
1 SG 40G IDE Hard Drive
1 Teac CDR Drive

I had one of those "Winblows moments".... Deleted the partition, Formatted NTFS, (forgot how to format MBR).

Installed XP Home with "slipstream" CD created (and used before) with Nlite. Also hit F6 during install and provided the additional SATA/RAID drivers just for good measure. I also later installed the NV61XX chipset software from inside XP.

Now when XP starts, it "cannot find the device specified", and won't install Nvidia Nforce 430/410 Serial ATA Controllers.
(I get this error twice, once for each of the SATA drives?) So at every re-start I deal with the "new hardware found" and "cannot install" balloons and dialog boxes.

WinXP is installed on one of these SATA drives. Device Mgr. shows no yellow exclamations, nor does it list any Serial ATA controllers.

I recall this exact scenario the first time I added the 2 SATA drives to the system about 2 years ago, but I don't recall how I resolved it. Any input would be appreciated..... :b

Hi Elizabeth.....

The link you posted doesn't really apply since I was not trying to re-locate an XP install. This was a fresh install on an (almost) empty disk.

I have a slipstream CD I had used in the past and used again this time, but I noticed from a previous install that after the initial install files are loaded, the setup program no long allows me to use the slipstream CD to continue the full installation and asks for my original MS disk "with SP2" included. So even though I started the install with the slipstream CD, I anticipated it might not load all info from that source again, so I hit the F6 key and also provided the SATA/Raid drivers from a 1.44 diskette which I also have on hand. The setup program seemed to load those drivers without incident.

It was when I was busy re-loading other software and constantly re-booting that I got tired of the "found new hardware" and "cannot find device specified" messages that I unzipped and installed the MB chipset drivers again. Those files are dated 2006 but are the newest versions of the drivers for my specific MB I could find.

These are the same MSI or Nvidia drivers that are on the slipstream CD, on the 1.44 floppy, and in the zip file..... so one way or another I gave WinXP every chance to install them for me.

I just looked through my stash and found the original MSI "Drivers and Utilities" CD that came with the MB, but those files are dated 1994-2001. Not sure if I want to risk installing those old drivers now and end up messing with my sound and video again to tweek everything.

so the found new hardware is for the sata drivers?? if you are not sure please see if anywhere on the error it gives you the driver name.

How To Find Drivers For An Unrecognized Device

1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
5. You should see a code similar to this

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
&REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

Vendor ID = 8086
Device ID = 27DC

7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to

http://pcidatabase.com/

There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

8. Then from there you can go directly to the hardware manufactureres website and get the driver.

This is a new 're'-install? If they worked for this mobo then, they should still work now. You can upgrade if you can find (xp) upgrades. I have very rarely upgraded things if they worked to my satisfaction, unless u/g was necessary for something else.

eg.: I have NEVER upgraded any bios, EVER.

Yes..... This is a fresh re-install using nothing I have not used in the past.

Balloon pops up twice saying "found new hardware... Nvidia Nforce 430/410 Serial ATA Controller"

Then dialog pops up twice saying..... "Cannot find the device specified"

@Liz.... Thanks for that link..... but in reviewing the information I believe I complied with all the pertinent steps involved in creating the slipstream drive and going through the install process. I don't think the AHCI bios settings apply to my hardware.... At least it's never been something to deal with in the past.

@litk.... I checked the MSI page last night and there are no newer drivers than the ones I already have. My initial posts here do state that I already installed these drivers 3 times in 3 different ways. Since WinXP did create a partition, format the partition, and then install on that SATA drive it seems to me that the drivers must indeed be installed..... My issue is how to get rid of the warnings I keep getting that they are not installed.

I've tried to u/l some jpg screen shots of my start-up here a few times now but there's always an instant error.... are new users restricted from u/l files?

right next to the post reply button is an upload a file button, generally you just need 5 replies, I believe you have that many now. what is the error?

You might want to contact Ian, he is the forum administrator, he may be able to help you upload the image. (look under Members tab for Ian.)

The error box I'm getting is completely non-descriptive..... just says "there was a problem uploading your file".

The first time I saw the Windows Registry was back in 1995 I think? The head-ache still hasn't gone away!!!

:(

My file system seems to be working fine..... I would like to get rid of the nag-ware is all.

copy/paste the following into notepad and save as a .reg, and then save to your desktop, then just double click and you will be asked if you want it merged into the registry say yes, and you should get a message saying it was successful:

Liz.... I was able to save the text you posted here in 3 different ways now.... will these registry changes remove ALL NOTIFICATIONS as you previously wrote about?

yes, once the .reg is merged, with the new d word, EnableNotifications, and it is set to 0, zero, you will not get any notifications, it will only merge as a .reg, :)

OK..... Thanks for that confirmation Liz.... I think I'll pass on permanently disabling the balloon notifications, and I'll pass on all those other unrelated edits as well.

As I posted above, this scenario is something I recall from a previous install, so eventually I'll stumble on how I "cured" it again.

okay, will keep checking, and BTW, there was only the one edit in that particular .reg file, I just copied the whole KEY to make the merge easier for you since you said you did not like messing with the registry, :)
