XP Freezing every few seconds

    I am running XP and the mouse and keyboard freeze every few seconds. I get about 3 seconds when they are both active and then they freeze again. I have tried running chkdsk but this had no effect. I also ran a registry check using ccleaner and that never had any effect either. Grateful for any advice as to what could be causing it.
