XP computer not finding network or internet

I have an old computer that used to have XP, during the years I upgraded to Win 7 and Win 10. This is an old computer and I need it to use XP because of some old SCSI hardware. I have lots of image files, so I found one from 2010 with XP and I restored that to my C drive.

I haven't had a problem with it connecting to my home network and the internet, but now it's not finding the internet or my local network. I have 3 computers wired together with LAN. The same LAN connection worked fine yesterday with WIN 10. Under Network Places Workgroup, I don't see the other computers.

When it tries to connect to my ATT Internet modem, it keeps dialing instead of connecting to the broadband in the usual way. It keeps saying redialing. It's using WAN MINIPORT PPPOE, and after trying to connect gets an ERROR 678. I'm sure I'm using the correct network user name and password. I just double checked it on my phone.

Regarding your first two paragraphs. This problem has been covered before. A lot of people have similar issues.

Use the search function on the Forum to look at the posts on “Network” lots of useful posts there over the years.

Windows XP has problems seeing Windows 10 machines. You will need to create a short cut. Follow the procedure outlined in the link above.

As you have cloned your machine from a previous time, you may need to reset the IP on network card/chip of your XP machine manually in network settings.

Modems are usually at 192.168.0.1

Regarding your last paragraph. Not much idea. But

  1. Check cables and if ports are flashing correctly with data on your network switch or Modem. Many broadband routers are used as a network switch also.
  2. Check network settings.
  3. Swap out cables.
  4. Trawl through posts on Forum looking for ideas.
  5. Get back to us if you get nowhere, with a brief summary of what you have done.

I have a number of computers which have a mix of Windows XP, 7, 10 and 11. Both my Windows XP computers can see and share files on the computers with Windows 10 and 11. The most important thing to do to make this happen is:

On my computers with Windows 10 and 11, I enabled SMB 1.0 Client and Server.

I gave up a long time ago seeing the computers in the network. Sometimes I could but it was unreliable. To get around that I created shortcuts to each computer on the network. To access a particular computer I double-clicked on its shortcut. Here is what it looks like on one of my computers with Windows XP:

1a. I first created a folder on its desktop called My Network
1b. I opened the folder and created shortcuts to each computer on my network.

2a. For example the shortcut to computer Darkmatter has a target \\Darkmatter.
2b. Note the other computer must be turned on and awake when the shortcut is created.

You only have to create the My Network folder with all the shortcuts once. Once you create this folder you can copy it to a flash drive and copy it onto the desktops of all the other computers.
