My XP desktop boots to one of two hard disks, which is identified as PS-WDC-WD 1 in the boot sequence. I replaced the PC's DVD drive (which had developed a fault) with an identical one. Now the boot menu only shows the second hard disk SATA-3m-WDC-WD. It doesn't show the first hard disk at all.

I can now access the second hard disk, but neither the first one, nor the DVD drive, are accessible.

    What is going on?

Without more information on your system specs all we can do is guess. Check the jumper on the DVD drive for master/slave if it's IDE and move it to the same position as your old DVD drive.

Again, without more info this all the help I can provide.

...and that's all that was needed! Did as you said, moved the jumper to match the old one, problem solved! Thankyou very much indeed!
