I have an elderly woman that was using MS Works to compile an address book, but updated to windows 8 after crash... Looking for someone to convert a works file to a Word or Excel file... Anyone willing to help?

Libre Office should be able to open them, and it's free.

if you do not have a microsoft office suite installed, you can go with libre office or open office.
