Windows XP Wireless Set Up

I just reinstalled Windows XP to my old Dell Dimension 4600 PC. After installing network drivers, I get the wireless connection icon on the bar. Double click the icon, I get a blank panel. It seems that wireless networks are not picked up. The old PC is dual boot. The Linux sees all available wireless networks. I guess that one or two drivers are missing. But when I run through all available network drivers for the PC on the Dell website, I don't see any missing driver.

What is missing?

look in device manager, if you see a yellow exclamation point, then that is the driver that is missing.

also you need to see if your pc came with a wireless connection or if you had to have it added.

I have a dell dimension 3000, which did not come with a wireless capability, unless I bought a wireless card and installed it in my pc. So I connect with an ethernet cable or lan. :)

Thanks for your information. The missing part is the ethernet controller. I run through all drivers in the network category as well as the modem category. That doesn't resolve the problem. I also try with the driver CD coming with the PC. The controller isn't found on the CD.

if it is installed then you should not have a yellow exclamation point in device driver

did you install your drivers in the proper order?

ORDER FOR DELL INSTALL DRIVERS

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
5. You should see a code similar to this

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
&REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

Vendor ID = 8086
Device ID = 27DC

7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to

https://www.pcilookup.com/

There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

if it is installed then you should not have a yellow exclamation point in device driver

Thanks very much for the detailed information. Following your instruction, I find that the missing part isn't a part of Windows XP, but relates to a wifi device I installed, a wifi adapter. I haven't been able to find the adapter online. I shall have a CD with the adapter.

you should be able to find the device online, but if you have the install cd that should do , be sure to read all the install notes, :)
