For the past few months, I have been unable to access the Windows Update website ( on any of my Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 machines. Whenever I try, I always seem to get Error number: 0x80072EFF. I have read that this could be caused by a malware infection, however I highly doubt this is the case since this will happen even on a brand new, clean install. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

    below from HERE

Renaming folders and Registering DLL’s Pertaining to Windows Update.

    a) Please copy and paste the following text into a new Notepad document, and save the file as Windows reset.BAT. (If saved correctly the icon will change from a Notepad file to BAT file which has two blue cogs as its icon).

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old1
    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old1

    b) Right click on the file Windows reset.BAT and select Run as Administrator.

    c) Restart the computer once it is done.

I did this, even though I had no problem accessing microsoft update, so the .bat file is not an evil one, :)

above is my onedrive, and in the folder public files there is the file, Windows update agent which is the latest, if you were to get to the update site it should ask you if you want to update to microsoft updates versus windows update and the update agent will then be downloaded and it will ask you to install before it can check for other updates.

let me know if it works or if we need to find another solution.

a brand new install can still get infected if you used an infected usb drive.

I always install an antivirus before going online.
