When trying to install the 'detection agent' of 'drivers cloud' at - https://www.driverscloud.com/en/start - the installation fails and I get a small widow with the following message:
"The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can happen if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance"

I looked in 'services.msc' and found the installer not started. Setting was 'manual' which I found to be the default setting. Tried to start many times in both manual and automatic setting but keep getting the following message repeatedly:
"The Windows Installer service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the Performance Logs and Alert service"

    What can I do?

msiexec shows that I have version V 4.5.6002.24433. This looks like a later version. What should I do?

BTW, on web page you have indicated with the link above, there is a link to a page for 'Install Instructions', MS appears to have removed that page.

    WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

when I go to the link I provided, choose Download, then choose the above for xp 32bit, then click next, it gave me a download box okay

the install instructions are just that, not a link, to install all you need to do is double click on the downloaded file.

I did all this exactly the way you showed me and msiexec still shows the same version V 4.5.6002.24433 and refuse to start giving the same message as above, about starting and stopping.

Did you notice that this version I have (V 4.5.6002.24433), looks like a newer version than what you indicate in post #2 (4.5.6001.22159)

Yes, according to this link, it's looks like I have the wrong version. Curiously, both my XPs have this same version. When I followed your instructions and installed version 4.5.6001.22159 nothing happened and V 4.5.6002.24433 refused to budge. What about uninstalling what I have and installing the correct one. I could create a System Restore point and try that if I know how to uninstall this.

according to what I have read, you cannot uninstall the wrong 4.5 installer as it is now part of the system, you would have to have a restore point to where the installer was 3.1, or reinstall xp.

I can do this. It will help if you can tell me what this action is going to achieve, because I don't understand.

Can some of you please check your version of Windows Installer in XP Pro 32 Bit and post here. That will help me to decide whether my version is what is causing this problem.

Did you install POSReady updates? Because the last update broke Windows Installer( well not that bad) but it didn't register the updated files.

    Yes I did.
This worked fine. Problem solved. Thank you.
Thank you. Strange, no one else here thought it worth while to check this for me :) Still puzzled as to how I ended up with a different version, which is really a version for Vista, according to MS!

I reinstalled my 2nd XP and now I am having the correct Windows Installer V 4.5.6001.22159. Can you tell me which POSReady update broke the installer so that I can avoid that update when I am doing the POSReady this time?

KB4494528, BUT, I have good new to you. There has been an Un(Official) corrected update for it:
https://web.archive.org/web/2019062...1v5584n1cy9cq/WindowsXP-KB4494528-x86-ENU.exe (If you the update in other languages, feel free to ask so)
It has been tested to be working on both of my XP machines :) Please note you will need to Uninstall the broken MS one from Add Or Remove Programs list :p

Thank you very much, This is amazing! Before I made my post #15 above I spent about 45 minutes on the internet trying to find out about this, and drew a complete blank , and here you are with all the information I need at your finger tips .

I uninstalled the bad one and WI went back to version 4.5.6001.22159. I installed the corrected one from your link and the version changed to 4.5.6002.24433. WI is now working fine.

BTW can you tell us where you found all the above information?
