Volume control icon missing from Task Bar

In Sound and Audio Device Properties, when I select 'Place volume icon on the task bar', I get the message "Windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed...".
How can I install this?

P.S. All audio functions are working fine.

your audio driver is either corrupted, or not installed, or is the wrong version, the audio functions might just be windows basic.
