I keep getting this message when trying to update XP:

"Installing Security Update for Windows XP Embedded (KB2686509) (update 1 of 2)... failed"

Never seems to install. I have no idea what to make of this. Help, anyone?

    Thanks

have you checked to see if it needs to install on a shutdown and not a restart??

go to start/turn off computer/ and is there a little shield icon on the shutdown button??

if so then shutdown and be patient it will finish by itself.

    Problems installing updates

Thanks, Elizabeth 23, for your reply. The updates don't install properly at the close-down either. At closing I get the choice of immediate closing without installing or allowing the installation to take place while the close is delayed. Still no installation either way, with the same message each time I close--to no avail.

Could be that XP is too outdated and can't accept whatever update is being offered. The overall operation of Windows does not appear to be lacking anything--there's just this nagging download reminder that never goes away.

    Missing .dll file

    Thanks again, Elizabeth 23:

I've checked the reference you gave, and will take a crack at installing the necessary .dll file. Had some problems with a kernel32.dll file before (another computer) and finally managed to straighten things out by hunting up and installing the file.

I'll give it a try with this one, too.
