Thorium Brower for XP (Chromium 122)

Here is another updated browser for Windows XP. I tried it on my Gateway MD2601u laptop and it offered better performance than Supremium on my XP SP4 with 3 GB RAM.

Here is the repository:

I downloaded the SSE3 version since that's the highest this laptop's AMD Turion X2 RM-72 CPU supports. Download the one appropriate for your CPU and post your findings but it's good to have another modern browsers for XP enthusiasts.

I'm giving Thorium a try with the SSE4 version.

Looks like uBlock origin comes with it. Any thoughts on other types of extensions? I've never been a guy that went to Chrome for anything.

I tried youtube, and that seems to work pretty good.

I too use Mozilla as primary and Chrome as secondary. Yes, I did forget to mention that it comes with UBlock Origin pre-installed.

Here's a few other Chrome extensions I can't live without:

Clear Browsing Data:

Tab Activate:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/tab-activate/jlmadbnpnnolpaljadgakjilggigioaj
I've always detested the way new tabs open in the background. This extension opens them in the foreground like Mozilla.

Ghostery:

I run this in conjunction with Ublock for more robust tracker and ad blocking.

Hi you have the same CPU as mine.
I have same CPU but 8GB DDR3 1600MGHZ Dual channel
Videocard: ATI HD 4800 series 512MB 256bit
My question is, since you tested youtube. Do you have problems with Vsync in videos ? I've had this problem with the other browser Supernium. Supernium was very fast for me but the Vsync makes watching videos on it not ideal.

I am not certain of the Vsync situation. You mean by a setting in the browser or by a setting in the control panel of the graphics card?

I did not try Supernium myself, but I did try the Chrome 360, by which my experience was very clunky at best. I had only briefly tested with Thorium, however, I was briefly pleased with the rather slick performance: more so than compared with the 360EE.

I end up searching for NoScript, FoxyProxy and Video Download Helper. I just didn't realize that the extensions in the Chrome Store were valid and worked with it.

I kind of wonder/wish someone has a more recent version of Thunderbird that us XP'ers can use.

I'm not talking about setting it's just that I get screen tearing while playing videos in Supernium. Performance is very quick. But I just get screen tearing. Just wanted to know if you experienced that issue in Thorium.

It depends on your PC specs - newer Chrome versions need more resources. Youtube plays fine on my laptop. Specs are AMD Turion X2 RM-72 2.1 GHz 3GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 RAM ATI Radeon HD3200 shared memory. Supremium stuttered on this same laptop although I haven't tried the latest builds.

I have noticed no such tearing. Video is quite smooth.

Sounds similar to the specs of my laptop, which I still use today at home and on the road. It's a CQ61.

I haven't used an email client in decades preferring the web browser to access my email but have you checked Roytam's offerings, specifically Mailnews/BNavigator/IceDove/IceApe?

I have not, though I will consider.

Back to Thorium: I am discovering an issue. The password manager crashes the browser if you try to view/edit from the manager.

I haven't tried the password manager but I have been testing further with various video sites. Youtube, Bitchute, BBC, CNN all play videos fine on this PC. ESPN videos however sputtered to the point as to make them unwatchable.

My advice is to use MyPal 68 as primary and Thorium secondary. Supremium's latest build gave me the same problem on ESPN.

I have covered this many times before. Thunderbird works fine on XP. I have over 20 gigabytes of emails that I can move between XP and windows 10.

Please see below.

I am using Thunderbird 31 right now. However, there are some times when emails don't read properly; or rather, cannot load images of certain emails. Oddly enough, Thunderbird 52 doesn't want to work on my machine and it crashes at launch.

Sorry about that, I should have done more research before commenting.

Version 52.9.1 only works in 32bit. That’s why it won’t work on your machine.

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/52.9.1/system-requirements/

I am using 115.10.1 on my Windows 10 Machine (64bit)

I think the very last and best to work on XP is 52.9.1

I have used 52.9.1 on various machines and configurations all 32bit - Memory from 3GB all the way up to 16GB

It’s great being able to copy emails from win 10 to XP machine.

Thunderbird 31 is from way back in 2014.

However, there might be one ray of hope. On my windows 10 machines it’s really easy to run a program in 32bit mode. A bit more of a pain in XP 64bit, but it is doable.

I think running Thunderbird 52.9.1 in good old 32bit mode might solve your problem

May or may not be related to your issue:

https://github.com/Alex313031/thorium-legacy/releases/tag/M119.0.6045.214

Read the release notes at the bottom:

"UPDATE: Upgrading from M109 to this release will break your saved passwords turning them into jumbled characters, you will have to clear them, and re-login to your sites. There is no way around this. It is due to (good) changes in how Chromium encrypts your passwords. On a positive note, after you log into your sites again, your passwords will be more strongly encrypted! Please see > #38 (comment)
UPDATE 2: I fixed the 32 bit builds! It was a stupid mistake on my part. Please see > win32ss/supermium#150 (comment) I will be building the 32-bit builds shortly.
