Not sure if that's the correct title however I recently did a system restore and when the system restarted after windows logo it goes to a black screen . I rebooted again and attempts to start in last known config aka safe mode screen , problem is I have no keyboard function , batteries are ok . I'm presuming usb ports are working as I used a microscope usb light to test . As with most folks born last century we are organized and have lost their original disk and the key sticker. So I am at a loss do I purchase a cd sp3 home from ebay and hope it boots or do I take up drinking alcohol . Anyway jokes aside I'm wondering if there's a generous soul who may point me in the right direction .

    Regards Macka

    1. can you boot to safe mode at all??
    2. if so attempt a new system restore to a point further back.
    3. what if any are the exact error messages received?
    4. if you can boot to safe mode, then run checkdisk from the start menu:

    http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=102348
    How to perform checkdisk
if you do not have Recovery Console installed, then run from the start menu
go to start, run, type in cmd
in cmd type in chkdsk c: /r and press enter
type Y for yes and press enter
    type exit and press enter
restart pc, allow checkdisk to finish and run again
this is a lengthy process depending on the size of your harddrive, the percentages will fluctuate, this is normal, you can view report in the event viewer.
go to start>run> and type in eventvwr.msc, click on the applications directory, and in the right hand panel choose winlogon.

    5. you could attempt a reinstall with a bought cd, if you do it must be either a retail cd or a match OEM to your make of pc

    6. what is the make, model and model number of your pc
    7. laptop or desktop
    8. what flavor of xp? pro, home or MCE

Have just borrowed a disc to try a fix but wont boot from cd drive , I'll try what minecraftPlayer suggested with a new keyboard and if that fails I will put it outside and let the animals deal with it, again thanks for the reply guys I really do appreciate...
