does anybody know a cpp compiler that just works? I know TDM-GCC and w64devkit work openwatcom should work too, I'd appreciate something that was released back when XP was popular or even a modern one that just works.

Not so very modern but it should still work for you: https://archive.org/details/borland-c
Or, if you don't mind using an old MS package, Visual C++ from Visual Studio 5 comes with its own IDE and still works OK for me - but, shameful as it may sound, at the time (at the turn of the millennium, if memory serves) I purchased it
