Oobetimer missing

Hello everyone,

A while ago I tried to activate windows do by messing with the oobetimer key.
That worked for a while, but eventually it asked for a code again.
I'm not sure why anymore, but then I thought it was a good idea to delete the key.

Is there a way I can get it back without having to reinstall xp?

I have a legal code on the pc, but no internet connection to get it verified.
So the only wat to get it back is to reinstall windows?

Why do you not have internet connection?

do you need a driver?

what is the Make, Model, and Model number of the pc?

----------------------------------

open Notepad from Accessories (all programs)

copy this to it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]
"OOBETimer"=hex:ff,d5,71,d6,8b,6a,8d,6f,d5,33,93,fd

1. make sure Word Wrap in notepad is not turned on
2. save as WPAEvents in the file type choose .reg
3. save to your desktop
4. double click and choose yes when asked do you want to merge into the registry
5. restart pc

you can do this without going to the internet.

from a working pc you might want to read this:

Thanks for the replies. I'll try it when I get back home.
I don't have Internet because the PC doesn't have a wifi hardware thingy (sorry, don't know the name).

Do you not wish to get internet?

you do not necessarily need wifi

and if there is a wifi driver download available for your pc, I can look online for you if I know the info make, model, and model number
type of xp, Home, Professional or Media Center edition,

If you cannot connect to the internet, be aware that if you do you are going to be way behind on security updates, and you should FIRST go to microsoft updates and download all high priority updates.

The pc can't connect to wifi because it doesn't have a hardware thingy to connect to wifi.
We have one of those lying around, something along the lines of skynet. It has one wifi connector and on the chip is a metal casing with yellow stickers.

Hope you know what I'm talking about

It's a topcom skyr@cer.
Looks like this one: www(dot)amazon.fr/gp/aw/d/B000233OQW/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/277-2097119-4490026
I don't know which number it has on top.
I can install it, but it can't connect to my wifi, it can find it.

That info topcom skyr@cer says it is a router, not a pc.

I could not get the www dot amazon to load, so still do not know what it looks like

Are you sure that is the info on your pc?

for example, mine is a Dell Dimension 3000

No, it is a card like a graphics card.

Like this. (Hope it works)

I have a card that looks like a graphics card, but has the capacity to find wifi networks.
I'll try the replacement when I get back home.

I tried the notepad trick, but it won't allow me.
It says I can only merge things in binary.

Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to write it in a different way?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]
"OOBETimer"=hex:ff,d5,71,d6,8b,6a,8d,6f,d5,33,93,f d

you want to copy it exactly like above, including the part of windows registry editor.

What do you mean you are not allowed?

are you on an administrative account?

if not do it in safe mode.

once you have copied above, ensured that word wrap is OFF, saved to your desktop as a .reg file, you should be able to double click and you will be asked if you want to merge with the registry.

post back with any error message, the EXACT error message please.

I'll try to translate it, as my pc is Dutch.
Couldn't import (the file on my desktop): the file is not a registryscript (not sure if its the actual term). You can only import binary registryfiles from the registry-editor.

Then there's the ok-button.

allright since you cannot import the .reg file do this:

go to start, run, regedit

in regedit go to this :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

when you get there if there is no key for WPAEvents then you must create one.

1. right click on Current version
2. choose New
3. choose Key
4. in box type WPAEvents exactly like that.
--------------------------------

then right click on WPAEvents

1. choose new
2. choose string value
3. in this box type OOBETimer
4. click on any open space
5. then right click on OOBETimer and choose modify
6. in the data value box copy/paste

FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F D5 33 93 FD

then click ok, click file on top , then choose exit and restart pc.

If this does not work then go back into regedit and change any of the above letters or numbers such as D5 to B6 or anything.

post back and let me know.

one other thing, you might have to right click on the key wpaevents and choose permissions and give yourself permission for full control.

There still is a key under the name of wpaevents, but it only has standard in it.
I can create a new key of wpaevents, but both give an error message when I try to make any kind of value.
The error message is: 'Could not make value: there occurred an error when writing to the register.'

I don't really know what I did, but I altered the reg-file a little bit and it let me add tithe registry.
Now there's a separate windowsNT with its own currentversion and only wpaevents.
I added oobetimer with the numbers and letters you said, but I still have to activate my pc.
