Oldware

Finding software that still runs on XP is growing more and more challenging: sometimes even the old reassuring "32bit" or "x86" leads to software that won't install on XP. Why? The devil knows, ask him :(

But an undeserved stroke of luck made me stumble upon a junkman site, https://vetusware.com, where I could get hold of some precious long since forgotten stuff as well as of other ancient software I knew little or nothing about - and some of it even worked fine.

The pros:
- they aren't after your money: once you've downloaded your limited free amount, you may pay for more by uploading your own oldware.
- there's a rich choice of interesting stuff that goes back even to DOS.
The cons:
- Watch out: not all of the available software is legitimate - better make sure that it's really abandonware or that the copyright has expired.
- Some pieces are poorly documented (be happy if they tell you what it's about). But you don't look a gift horse in the mouth ;)

I don't know about you, but as a manic collector of ancient books I feel really at home in there :)

Thanks Chiron! I was there for about 3 days and am still downloading loads of ancient stuff.
No idea about what I will do with it but just having it makes me feel happy.
My wife says I remind her of Uncle Scrooge for he doesn't spend his money, he just piles it up and rejoices at the sight of it :D:D:D

Thank you! I think I should start saving such website adresses. Will check this stuff out!

I would be careful when downloading at vetusware... I have had bugs in some archives... Also many just demos but not tested by uploader or non-functional useless junk just thrown on there...

If you wanna BULK download a buncha Vetusware stuff by category just go here-

ftp://69.43.38.172/mirrors/VetusWare/

Sure, Vetusware is a real (virtual) junk shop: quite a share of what you get there may prove useless, tainted or crap, so better watch out.
But the rest makes it worth the while :)
