Finding software that still runs on XP is growing more and more challenging: sometimes even the old reassuring "32bit" or "x86" leads to software that won't install on XP. Why? The devil knows, ask him
But an undeserved stroke of luck made me stumble upon a junkman site, https://vetusware.com, where I could get hold of some precious long since forgotten stuff as well as of other ancient software I knew little or nothing about - and some of it even worked fine.
The pros:
- they aren't after your money: once you've downloaded your limited free amount, you may pay for more by uploading your own oldware.
- there's a rich choice of interesting stuff that goes back even to DOS.
The cons:
- Watch out: not all of the available software is legitimate - better make sure that it's really abandonware or that the copyright has expired.
- Some pieces are poorly documented (be happy if they tell you what it's about). But you don't look a gift horse in the mouth
I don't know about you, but as a manic collector of ancient books I feel really at home in there
