I signed up because of this question.

I was given three hard drives which came from machines running XP. They would not boot the machines they were in. Diagnostics were run showing one [or two] message blocks with an uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.

The owner was told that the information they contain was lost.

The drives were removed and replaced.

He was told it would cost too much to recover the needed data. I take this to mean that it can be done but it will take a lot of time.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

Google for a program named Recuva (freeware).

If you have another PC you can connect these old hard drives to, connect them up.

Install and run Recuva. It will find almost all deleted/damaged files for you. Any files undamaged will have a green dot/icon next to them.

    Hope it works for you.

    Regards,

    Mark.

    I'll try this.

I may need further help with this, but thanks.
