Hello everyone. This is my first post so bear with me.

I'm trying to help a college at work by reinstalling xp for him on his 8 year old acer travelmate p4 2ghz, 772mb ram and 40gb hdd.

Installed ok, but now problem getting it set up properly, especially video playback.

When i try playing a movie with vlc, cpu maxes out and laptop freezes and i have to end the vlc process with task manager.

Smplayer plays, but at a what seems frame per frame per second rate (exagerated but just to paint a clear picture).

Mpc-hc with k-lite mega codec pack plays back a little faster tham smplayer, but still very choppy and maxes out cpu.

Youtube through google chrome, firefox and opera is choppy at best and maxes out cpu.

Even looking at linux solutions, but not much luck there either apart from puppy linux.

Maybe it's time to chuck the old girl and upgrade the hardware ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

go here and look for the manual for your acer, go to the section for xp.

    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/professional-support

scroll through this page as there is a listing to find drivers for your pc,

    -------------

    have you installed sp3 yet?

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24
…you can ignore the text that says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.
    Reboot twice after installing.

and then you will need to go to Microsoft updates and get fully patched and updated

do an express scan and install all'

then do a custom scan and install and rootkit updates.
