Need to get rid of something from the task bar.

    After a clean install of my XP I need help to remove two unwanted items in the taskbar. In the attachment below, you can see them to the left of the arrow in the notificaton tray. The faded icon 'Desktop' and the 'Recycle bin'. The "Desktop" is benign. Nothing happens when I click on it. When I click the "Recycle bin" it gets opened. How can I delete them?
