So I like Windows Media Player 9 and I want to stream MP4 files and any other modern files without having to deal with third party codecs that I don't know if I trust. Any recommendations?

I don't think Media Player 9 can play MP4 files natively - I have Media Player 11 on my XP box and I just tried to stream an MP4 video from my media server and it gave me an error.

The easiest thing would be to use VLC (all codecs are built-in)

It will stream your MP4 files effortlessly. If you miss the Media Player 9 look and feel you can always download the Media Player skin for VLC.

To be honest I haven't used Media Player in close to a decade - There's too many other media players for XP such as VLC that are much better alternatives.
