Microsoft officially ends all support for XP

Microsoft announced that the remaining version of Windows XP that was still receiving updates, POSReady 2009 ended yesterday.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4489209/end-of-support-for-windows-embedded-2009

Some of you had the registry hack that fooled MS into thinking your XP was POS 2009 were receiving security updates even after Microsoft stopped support of all desktop XP OSes.

To be honest I still have 2 laptops with XP Pro SP3 that haven't updated in close to a decade and yes, that are internet connected with no antivirus. Oh nooees! The big bad hackers are gonna get me!!!

Ok, these are kind of throw away machines that I don't use for anything important so if they ever did fall victim to malware, no big deal. They're not my main rigs.

Anybody here use XP for daily use?

I do. Been on it at least five hours a day, pretty much everyday, for past couple years. I go everywhere, including those EVIL and malware-infested porn sites that M$ (and its devoted parrots) swear will turn my PC into a virus-bloated botnet....plus I ditched the antivirus (gasp!) last year! End result? Still waiting for the much ballyhooed virus, trojans, rootkits, etc., to infect and infest my PC. Definitely not holding my breath. I did not do the POS 2009 nonsense, as M$ loves to slip in their own version of malware with their 'updates', so I surely do hope they will leave my XP Pro untouched now. Good riddance!

You can install XP Pro but you won't be able to update it unless you get all the updates from another source

Thanks for the tip. After all the useless junk (and M$ corporate malware) secreted in the service packs, I can well live without the updates. I do have a custom build nearing completion, so that was my only concern, especially as I chose the components specifically for XP Pro.

I want to know if all these updates are identical for all different language versions ?
if they are compatible then a unique unofficial service pack might run on any XP computer regardless the native language

Starting July of 2019 windows update servers for vista xp 2000 and 98 will go offline forever
i hope someone will create a private update server.
windows 98 and 2000 cant access win update server sice a decade, it will be a nice thing to create a private update website wich contains updates for all windows from 95 to xp

Wait does that mean I can’t connect my xp laptop and computer to Windows update? I’ve been trying to get updates for the desktop and Microsoft works 2001 but I haven’t had any luck these past few days

Use portup program (portable updates), download program to a flash drive , at least 4-6gb, let it search while online, then download everything, very lengthy process, this way you will have all your updates, and the updates will still be available through the Microsoft Update Catalog, you will probably just have to install individually and manually, with portable updates you will get the majority downloaded and installed before ever going online after a fresh install.

Most medical offices I have seen, as a patient, use XP on the workstations in the doctors' offices. Probably because the overall package is very expensive and the provider has made its own security arrangements.

I wonder what a single user could find to provide at least some security...other than pulling the RJ45 plug when you don't need internet/network access. (but I wonder would any attacks collect somehow to immediately launch once you plug it back in again?)

I use XP 32bit every day on my main computer. Keep in mind I'm doing internet stuff mainly via Windows 7 and Linux Mint physical and VMWare virtual machines. Most of my storage is on Windows 7 due to GPT format support.

I control all from my main XP box via VNC connections to all the other boxes and drive mappings. I have 2 rack mount M-Audio Delta 1010 sound cards for 14 stereo inputs (balanced and/or Pro levels if I so chose), so I have sound from some of the other boxes. Those sound cards aren't even on my main XP box. One is on dxp, an 8GB XP32 box, another is on my only Win2000 box- which is also my jukebox, connected to my amp and speakers.

On my main XP box, I've used all drive letters, so some shares are accessed via UNC shortcuts. Most of the other Windows boxes use a small (20MB) RAMDisk with which I use mountvol to bring drives to a single share- for example dxp is mapped to a single letter via \\dxp\drives. drives is a mountvol share to 9 drives on that box. That technique greatly reduces the amount of drive letters needed.

The physical boxes with Windows 7 are all 64bit and 8 to 16GB RAM each. Most XP physical boxes are 2 to 8 GB RAM. Those in VMs are tailored to the task being run, some as low as 512MB. I use the pagefile on a RAMDisk mod on the XP32 boxes with 8GB RAM (works very well, allowing commit charge up to 5GB with zero paging delays).

I use Offline Update to save updates for a new box. It's not the most user friendly program, but was one of the first available and creates ISOs you can burn an update CD or DVD from.

As they dropped support for OSes over the years, you'll need the right version (all the releases are on their site):

Here's some of the folder names I created for various MS update downloads:
Those with no description of the content are blanks that I use as a starting point when creating a new update folder (the ISO is created in one of the folders). I have it save all the individual MS updates too should I ever need them.
