Lost COA

While wrongly thinking I could be a techie, I managed to crash my Compaq running XP Professional.
I purchased an XP repair disk, but now I need to re-activate my install and I no longer have my COA or original installation disks as I purchased the computer in 1998.
Does Microsoft have a way of finding my COA number as I registered the machine as soon as I booted it up?
Do I have any other options?
I really like this machine and operating system as it has truly become an "old pal" and performing flawlessly for me over the years.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this new boot authenticated.
The box on the bottom of my screen says I have 30 days to authenticate it, but doesn't say what happens after those 30 days.
Does anyone know what's next for me if I can't get the COA loaded>

Your XP install has been done with a Dell recovery disk, but the computer is based on a Retail motherboard.
Either you used the wrong disk for the install, or you were sold a counterfeit copy of XP.

above from HERE

each OEM (ie. dell, HP, asus, etc...) repair/recovery disk is for the particular oem pc that it was originally installed on.

you say you had a Hewlett packard

the mga diag tool says the bios is for a dell.

to install on various pc's you would need a retail disk and the coa would be on the box the cd came in, for the pc the coa is on the side of the tower and/or the bottom of the laptop.
