I am trying to fix my friends computer, but can not figure out the problem. The operating system is Windows XP Professional (SP3). No matter what I install, I can not open it. For example, I installed Avast and could not open it, but it installed correctly on the computer. No error pops up when I click on the exe, just nothing happens. I can not even open Microsoft Security Essentials, which was already installed on the computer.

have you tried system restore? try to go back as far as you can and then start from there

if system restore does not work, take drive to a different pc and set up as an external drive to run a virus scan
