I have XP Professional version 2002 with SP2 and want to get an on-line upgrade to SP3. I can't seem to make an internet connection with my current Internet Explorer version 6.0. I acquired this machine several months ago and have not ever connected to the internet with it. Are there some special settings I need to make in order to make the connection?

    1. if this is a used pc, then you want to clean install xp

    2. you will need the drivers for your pc from the manufacturer's website

    3. you will need to download IE8 and SP3 and the latest windows installer and an antivirus before you connect to the internet.

    4. if you have a hp w/amd processor see below:

Before you install SP3 read this article…
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
…and if your PC is an HP Pavilion, Presario or Media Center and has an AMD processor you need to install this patch before installing SP3…
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-60484-2
…to find out if you have an AMD processor...
    • Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and hit the Pause Break key
    • Your processor type is shown in the Computer: section
Then install SP3 by downloading and running from...
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24
…you can ignore the text that says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.
    Reboot twice after installing.

if you let me know the make, model and model number of your pc, I can see if I can help you find your drivers, which you will have to download from a working pc and then carry over to your pc that is not connected to the internet.

This is the same Dell Dimension 3000 computer that had the video driver issue. Professional version 2002, SP2. I installed the XP from disk so I would call that a clean install. Since I have had the computer, it has never been connected to the internet. I really want to make the computer able to connect to the internet more than I want to upgrade to SP3. Upgrading to SP3 would be a bonus. I read about a possible corrupt Winsock.dll causing my problem. The Winsock.dll version is 3.10.0.103. Is this likely my issue?

scroll down to network driver, you need this to connect to the internet.

I also have a 3000, but my integrated network card was damaged and I had to purchase a new one from dell.

look at the back of the tower, when you plug in an ethernet cable there should be a green light showing that the nic card is active, if there is no green light and the driver is installed then the integrated network card may be damaged, install the driver and check, you can download the driver from a working pc to a flash drive and carry over to the disconnected pc.

that is the same version that is on my pc, if you are not getting a specific error pointing to this file, then it is not the problem,

my first reply also has the download for sp3, which you should also install before connecting to the internet and ie8 also, you want these installed for the increased security protections.

I didn't realize there are so many concerns about the SP3 upgrade. In your opinion, is the SP3 an important enough upgrade to bother with or should I be OK with the SP2? This Dell Dimension 3000 is not my primary computer.

each and every high priority update from Microsoft is important as they cover security breaches, sp3 has been out for over 5 years and yes it is important, if you ever connect to the internet, microsoft updates will not work without it or IE8.

since you are going to try to connect to the internet on the 3000 it is best to be as secure as possible, did you install the driver for network connections?
