Well, knock off isn't really the right word. More like parody.

Story was actually written by a 20 year old (winner of many literary awards) back in 2003 when the LotR trilogy was coming out in theaters. Hence, it is 100% parody of the Peter Jackson movies!

B/c of the complexity of the story, it had never been produced as a TV series until now.

Differences between LotR and Ice Fantasy:

1. Aragorn's heirloom sword (that cut off Sauron's finger) = Deicide (Deity Cidal sword) in Ice Fantasy.

2. Gandalf is the (Old) King of the Ice Tribe.

3. Saruman is the King of the Fire Tribe.

4. Frodo Baggins = Kasuo, prince of the Ice Tribe who is to inherit the throne.

5. Samwise Gamgee = Ying Kong Shi, Kasuo's younger brother (ie. the "bromance" between Frodo and Sam)

6. Aragorn/Strider = Li Luo, a female envoy of the immortals.

7. Sauron = Yuan Ji, a nimbus/cloud like (evil) being who has lost his physical body.

8. Smeagol/Gollum = does not appear in Ice Fantasy.

9. Ice Fantasy also borrowed some story elements from other great writers: Woman who falls for a man only to discover he might be her brother, but then later on revealed that they aren't siblings after all; two men who fought over a girl, but neither ended up with her; some side characters love story of Tristan and Isolde caliber, etc.

The Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings set designer Dan Hennah was enlisted to design the sets for the production [Ice Fantasy], which were inspired by the buildings, landscapes and other aspects of ancient China as well as other western cultures.[15][18] One particular set, called the "Endless Sea", had been reported to be an area of 7,000 square meters, using 500 tons of artificial snow.[20] It had also been reported that about 300 million yuan was invested for the drama's production, with 2 million yuan to create the main palace alone.[20] Furthermore, more than 100 craftsmen were needed to make 6,000 props, with many used in large-scale battle scenes.[21] Around 70 to 80 percent of post-production was centered around the special effects and CGI.[22] Youhug stated: "This should be an unprecedented investment in a domestic drama, we also hope to achieve good visual effect as much as possible."

(Spoiler Alert) Fantasy epic Ice Fantasy has finally concluded with a grand finale. However, fans are now wondering if the story is really over, upon seeing new photos released by the production team.

The fantasy drama became a hit in China with its unique genre and never-before-seen presentation of an imaginary universe. Throughout the drama's 62 episodes, which showcased a huge ensemble of characters and myriad fantasy realms, a common recurring theme is that of transformation and rebirth...
