    HP pavilion ZE5185 laptop
Tried to use my xp home upgrade (dif. computer) disk.
tried to use the genuine MS Prod key, stuck to the laptop, to no avail.

Just want to install a legal xp, without having to load all the useless crap from hp

There must be way to do this, any ideas.

    Thank you

unless you have a retail cd of xp home OR a hp reinstallation cd, you cannot do this.

most laptops have a recovery partition, this will take it to factory settings, you will have to update and install drivers etc.

the key is still genuine but only for that pc as all oem keys are tied to the pc.

is your recovery partition still there??

I have the 6 recovery disk that came with the laptop, but hp loads all kind of junk in with it.
Is there any way to just extract, just xp?

I did format the complete harddrive

    Thank you in advance.

you could pay for ISO buster and this would extract all the files, I do not know of a free program to do this.

you can always uninstall all the bloatware, or you could look for a trustworthy download online.

It does not take 6 disks to reinstall xp, can you tell me what the disks are labeled exactly , please.

System Recovery, WXP HE English disk 1 of 1 , 2 of 6, etc 6 total.

I did have a xp home upgrade disk which I used and got it to install,
however It would not use the oem lic. #, so i used my key for that, just to see if it would work.
However, I still want to be able to get all the updated for Xp and have it be legit, i bought it HP, why can't i use it.
Once I have downloaded the updates, it will never go online. it is used to run an old program, that can't be upgraded to anything newer, as it doesn't exist.
Thank you for any work around ideas.

an upgrade disc is not an install disc, in order to use an upgrade disc you must have first installed the previous os, then the upgrade disc on top of that.

    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07145

read the above, the section on reinstalling with recovery discs

also if you have an amd processor you will have to install a patch before you can install sp3 and thus get windows updates to work.

The simple instruction is to uninstall all bloat-ware which arrives on your PC installation - you will not be able to resolve unless you purchase a valid Product Key and launch Windows XP from ISO-burnt USB or CD.
