For a given machine, how do I backup XP so that it works on any HDD and any partition on a subsequent restore using "crude" methods?

Can I do it by noting the drive's uniqueID and copying all files with an archiver, such as WinRAR that also includes hidden and system files? To later restore the image, do I simly reassign the uniqueID to match the original? How about if I were to restore to partition 3 while the original was installed on partition 2. Would reassigning partition drive letter work?
