I was getting low on hdd space, so I moved about 25GB of files to a backup drive, but my hdd doesn't show the freed space. I know in newer versions of Windows it does it automatically. How do I fix this in XP?

what does it show in disk management?
    have you run a defragmentor?

if you go to my computer and hover over local disk it will show free space in a balloon tip

reply 2: you can also change the view to details and the capacity and amount of free space will be listed
