Why does a quick format of an hdd take a couple of seconds but if you select normal format. It takes well over an hour! Is it that more thorough?

Quick format just formats your drive. Normal format scans your harddrive for bad sectors and it formats after checking it. If your harddrive is large it can take a very long time to format :)
