I want to use my xp x64 professional disk to create a fat32 partition and format with fat32. I am only able to format with ntfs. What's MS got against fat32 now? I am using ntfs and it's fine but I want to use fat32 instead. How can I format a new partition with fat32?

Well I haven't tried the fat32format.exe file yet. I zero'd out the first 1.6 GB of my HD to clear things and used a tool called "parted magic" a very good tool. But it's not an MS util. The reason I haven't tried fat32format.exe yet is because I can't format a mounted partition. That happens to be ntfs. I think your first link explained why my x64 DVD isn't formatting the entire 200GB HD with fat32 without hanging. A MS instituted 32 GB boundary. I formatted a new partition with fat32 and everything installed then the installation hung on me. So I assume I will need to create a new partition formatted using the fat32format.exe util. I also had grub 2 in my boot record so I had to use fixmbr and fixboot and that still didn't work.

So I haven't tried the util yet but I definately will. I guess I could create a first partion of less than 32 GB and fat format that. Have you ever used fat32format.exe the CLI or GUI version?

And it's not that I have anything against ntfs; but then again I don't have anything against fat32 either. And it seems to be more universally identified such as for SD cards and USB sticks.

you can read about it on the link above, from what I have read it seems that to use fat32 would be for compatibility between things like linux and mac
