Speaking of... I have been watching 'Lynda.com - 3DS Max 6 Training' with George Maestri, which is pretty good... He models a figure which happens to be the Joan of Arc model & even though it's done in Max 6 his methods are a pleasant 'OLDSKOOL' using parametric primitives with stacks of 'edit mesh modifier' over them all easily done in Max4 or even 3.1...
Anyways if anyone wishes here are the body modeling videos where the figure gets started, quite valuable for oldskool methods workflow... I have also included the JOA tutorial again in case anyone missed it first time-
