Desktop Folders contents deleted

Hello from the west of Scotland

I was fiddling around with some settings on my PC which I thought would speed it up. I cannot remember where those settings were unfortunately. The result of me doing what I did was that after re-booting my desktop was just a big blue void and when I did manage to restore the folders onto the desktop I discovered that the contents of all my folders were deleted even although the folder icons were still there.

Any one reading this with any technical savvyy will probably be thinking 'what a plonker' and they will be correct!

I have looked everywhere on my PC for the contents to no avail. Can anyone please help me to determine where they have gone. They must be somewhere.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Roebuck

most items on the desktop are shortcuts

a shortcut to an item only points to the location of the original item which should be still on the pc.

1. are there any other user accounts on pc??

2. does the admin account have the same folders??

3. have you done a search for the particular name of a folder??

4. have you checked inside the recycle bin??

5. you might try a system restore to a point before all this, but as system restore does not mess with data, this might not work.

6. and an important fact always do a system restore point before messing with the pc.
and always back up your data.

7. what specific folders are you looking for??

Thanks Elisabeth I have tried all of these at the time. One particular folder had jpegs of an accident which I need for the insurance company. I have looked through hundreds of images and the ones I am looking for are not there.

If you have searched for .jpeg and have not found the ones you are looking for then I would say they were gone, you could try to recover them, but if the disk has been written over then the chances are slim.

Have you set the options in folder options to show hidden folders on the off chance that you dropped the pictures into the wrong folder??
