Dell Optiplex 170L freeze when trying to install winxp

I didn't know where the jumpers are.

I'm working on the rig now, and I noticed the jumpers.

But I don't know how to set the jumpers for the installation process.

I searched for the HDD and the CD ROM, and found their manuals:

1. Western digital 80GB WD800:

2. LG GCR 8526B CD/DVD drive:

My question now is that is there a specific setting for normal boot, OS installation, etc. ?

How to set the jumper on the CD and HDD drives ?

The manual for the computer assumes Cable Select. It also assumes you are using the cable that came with the computer.
For a hard drive and CDROM connected to the same cable...

The data cable has three connectors. One end connects to the motherboard with one or two drives connected to the other two connectors: [1]-------------[2]-------------[3]

Do the three connectors have different colors? If yes, then the cable is connected as follows:
1 blue - motherboard
2 grey - slave drive
3 black - master drive

If you DO use CableSelect then set the jumpers as follows
  • Hard drive = CSEL
  • CDROM = CSEL
If you DO NOT use CableSelect then set the jumpers as follows
  • Hard drive = Dual [Slave]
  • CDROM = MA [Master].
Connect the drives as follows
[Motherboard]-------------[Hard drive]-------------[CDROM]

If you are not sure try both configurations to see what works.

Alright !

It's working thank you so much and all the members who contributed to this thread :)

The problem actually is the CD drive was in the 170L rig is faulty. So I used the CD drive from the GX260 and it worked right away.

I'm really happy I finished this one, it was on my bench for weeks. Now I can proceed to other stuff.
