I have no xp boot disk but pc requires one. I have downloaded "winxpsp1a_en_hom_bf.exe". Do I need to run this to create a disk on another pc or just put it on a disc and insert it into the XP machine?

according to the site above you just insert the disc and run from that to install xp, I would be leery of a downloaded xp as it is most likely not legal and you will run into activation problems if xp was not the original os and if it is an oem pc then you should have an oem disc to install. all I can say is try it and see what happens, make sure you set the bios to boot to cd first
