Computer Freezes Upon Plugging in USB device

Hi,

I have a desktop that seems to have recently developed a problem with using USB devices. Whenever any USB device (with a few exceptions, I'll elaborate below) is plugged in while Windows is running, the computer would completely freeze and become unresponsive to all input, requiring a hard-reset to make it usable again. If a USB device is plugged in during boot, the boot process doesn't go any further than the scrolling Windows screen, after which it gets stuck on a black screen.

This seems to happen for any USB drives, printers, and even my camera. The only devices which don't cause the computer to behave this way are my wireless USB mouse and keyboard receiver, as well as USB smart cards used for authentication for some Chinese banks.

I've tried the following to no avail:

1. Plug in a PS/2 keyboard to make sure that Windows was actually frozen, not just unable to read from the USB ports. Windows seems to actually be frozen.

2. Boot into Ubuntu on the same machine from an Ubuntu installation DVD to make sure that the problem is specific to Windows. Ubuntu seems to have no problem using the USB ports with any device.

3. Uninstall all drivers under the "USB" category in device manager and let Windows reinstall them.

4. Disable the drivers for the Chinese bank smart cards.

5. Ensure that all Windows Plug and Play services are set to automatically start at boot.

6. Boot Windows in safe mode with command prompt and in diagnostic mode. When booting in this fashion, boot gets stuck after indicating that MUP.SYS is being loaded.

I've read that MUP.SYS is rarely the problem when something like this occurs: it's merely the last driver to load, and after that Windows starts doing some things that it doesn't report.

At this point, I've exhausted everything I can think of. Any help on this problem would be highly appreciated!

I forgot to mention that the computer is running Windows XP Professional 32 bit. It has an ASUS P5SD2-X motherboard with a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor.

run checkdisk first, then we will do some other things:

if you do not have Recovery Console installed, then run from the start menu

go to start, run, type in cmd

in cmd type in chkdsk c: /r and press enter

type Y for yes and press enter

type exit and press enter

restart pc, allow checkdisk to finish and run again.

--------------------

this can be a lengthy process depending on the size of your harddrive, run as many times as it takes until no errors are found and fixed, report can be viewed in Event viewer

go to start, run, type in eventvwr.msc, go to applications, then Winlogon.

post back with results and we will go from there.

1. what is your current antivirus?

2. does device manager have any warnings?

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

The computer is using Microsoft Security Essentials as its antivirus and Device Manager is not showing any warnings.

Hi, sorry for the wait.

I found three files under the winlogon folder in Event Viewer. I've enumerated each of them and pasted the contents below (had to edit the links in order to post). However, the dates recorded in each of these files seem to be off, in particular the last one which seems to be dated to before UNIX time. I ran chkdsk some time last week.

Checking file system on D:

OS should be on C:, this may be one of your problems

how many drives do you have?

what partitions on each drive?

is the date/time correct on your task bar?

is the date/time correct in the Bios?

your cmos battery might be failing if the time does not stay correct.

Hi,

My OS is on C:. I think for that for some reason the logs for the latest chkdsk operation weren't written.

I have two harddrives, one 2 Gb drive with one partition and one 250 Gb drive with 4 partitions. The date and time appear to always be correct in the task bar and also in the BIOS. I don't think there's a problem with the CMOS battery.

Should I run chkdsk again? If so, how can I ensure that the results are logged?

In Event Viewer, right-click Application in the left pane , then click Properties, then click Restore Defaults and Clear Log on the General tab, and Restore Defaults on the Filter tab, then Apply, OK.

Have you ever cleared the logs?

They should over write when full, but go ahead and right click on each, choose clear all events, say no to save you will not need them now.

and do the above on the filter tab for applications,

and then run checkdisk again.

Hi,

That seems to have fixed the Event Viewer. Please find the log for my latest chkdsk run below. Thanks!

Okay, your checkdisk looks good now, there are always going to be some index things to clear up, but no more errors have been found.

Run the computer for a while and see if any issues occur.

has the usb issue resolved itself ?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575

troubleshooting usb ports.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900

why usbs may quit working.

when the device manager window opens, scroll down, find universal serial bus controllers
double click universal serial bus controllers, it's on this list

now you will see a list, find USB root hub on the list

double click the first USB hub on the list (or in a laptop check the settings for mouse and keyboard power saving)

when the USB hub properties window opens, click the power management tab at the top of the window

now you will see a box that says: "allow computer to turn off this device to save power"

Un-check that box, click OK

Now double click the second USB hub on the USB Hub Properties list, click the power management tab, un-check the power saver box just as above and click OK

Now repeat that same procedure for all the other USB hubs on the list, un-check the power saver box in each USB hub, until you have done all the USB hubs on the list. There may be several, you must do each, one at a time.

Now close all your windows and restart the computer

test the device now.

Also, were there any yellow exclamation points in device manager???

more troubleshooting.

post back if any of the above helps.

I would use Hard Disk Sentinel or Crystal Disk info and see what's up with your HHD's. Chkdsk doesn't give you much info. HDS is very good and worth buying th epro version. Sometimes doing a format and writing all 1's or 0's to the hhd well recover any bad sectors, or at least reallocate them.

When I have usb problems it's almost always from buggy drivers, look for the latest available.

Hi,

It took a while, but I've tried all of the suggestions above. However, the problem still persists. I've checked Device Manager again and there are no yellow exclamation marks underneath any of the devices listed, even hidden ones.

Maybe it would serve as a helpful reminder to say again that some devices do still work on the computer, such as the USB keyboard and mouse, as well as those smart cards. Other devices such a storage devices and printers trigger the problem when plugged in. Also keep in mind that this problem does not occur when booted into Linux, which would seem to suggest that hardware is not the problem.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but the drivers for the USB smart cards were installed shortly before this problem was noticed. However, uninstalling those drivers and accompanying software did not resolve the problem.

I would really appreciate any other suggestions you might have.

Thanks!

Some USB2 devices do not work properly on USB 1.1 ports, and some USB1.1 devices fail on USB2 ports. onboard usb cannot provide enough power then you need powered usb hub.

Format the usb key and see if this solve the problem, also check your security settings to not conflict with inserted usb drives.

Did the flash drives work okay, and then stopped for no reason?

1. you might plug in the flash drive, open device manager, go to disk drives and uninstall the flash drive, (leave it plugged in), restart pc and let windows reinstall the driver for the flash drive.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

When you connect a USB drive for the first time the computer will install a driver, that baiscally tells the computer what kind of instructions it needs to carry out in order to talk to your particular brand of USB drive. Sometimes when the drivers are loaded on the computer they are able to cause it to freeze.

Does the computer just freeze completely or are you able to move the mouse around and click on the start menu with the keyboard? If you can, press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time to open Task Manager, and choose the column that says CPU usage. If you can, find the name of the program that has the highest number in CPU usage (apart from System Process). If you can, End that process and it might work.

did this work?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

1) Insert a USB Cardbus into the Wireless Adapter slot
2) After computer accept the card
3) Insert a USB Flash Memory stick into the Cardbus
4) Once the computer accepts the stick
5) The regular USB slot will work
Try it.

This worked for another user, but I could not verify.

Any new errors in event viewer when the freeze occurs?

1. when a freeze occurs, wait approx 10 -15 minutes, and does it unfreeze?

post back with results.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the flash drives were all working on this computer for many years and all seem to have inexplicably stopped working. The drives still work fine on other computers. All of the ports on the computer are USB 2.0 ports and all of the devices that we have are also USB 2.0 compliant.

The computer does freeze completely when a USB drive or pinter is plugged in and the computer becomes inoperable without a hard reset (at which point the USB device needs to be removed, otherwise Windows doesn't even load the login screen). I've tried waiting for around 2 hours but the computer doesn't unfreeze.

Another thing I've tried is to capture USB packet data on one USB port using USBPcap (an extension for Wireshark) and then plug in a USB drive to that port, but no packets are recorded before the computer freezes. After restarting the computer, checking the log file also yields no packets. I've been able to successfully log packet data from the few devices that do work on this computer though.

I've also tried showing non-present devices in Device Manager and removing all of the USB Mass Storage Device drivers, then plugging in a USB drive, but the computer freezes like before, without any prompt to install drivers for the device.

I don't have a USB cardbus to try your last solution with, and no new errors have appeared in the event viewer. I will try this if you feel that it's likely to solve the problem, even given the new information I've provided.

Thanks again!

in device manager the flash drive will be listed in Disk Drives,

with the flash drive plugged in, do not open or anything, go to device manager, look under disk drives, uninstall the flash drive.

restart pc, and see if windows will load the new driver now.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

what I am thinking is that you may have to copy all data , on the pc that does not freeze, off the flash drive, then reformat, then copy all data back and see if that may be a solution
