Adobe Audition 3.0.1

I didn't know they released more free keys of their older software. I only knew of Adobe PhotoShop CS2. Which I believe works in XP too. Perhaps we should make a thread for all the Adobe software like this.

AP Guitar Tuner
AP Guitar Tuner redux 50%.jpg

https://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Other-AUDIO-Tools/AP-Guitar-Tuner.shtml

This is my default DAW guitar tuner. It works well and is quite precise.
It comes with a helpful one-page manual. It is especially handy for people who use alternate tunings or want to learn alternate tunings.

Audio Phonics Inc. Is long gone. More info here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010811235938/http://www.audio-phonics.com/moreguitar.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20011202023247/http://audio-phonics.com/moreguitar.html

In my DAW setup I have a dedicated soundcard with 2 channels S/PDIF I/O, 2 channels analog I/O and MIDI I/O; the analog I/O goes to a patch bay. For me, patching into this tuner program can be cumbersome if my channels are all assigned and Adobe Au is open.

I assign this tuner program from its options menu to the default sound driver on the motherboard (e.g. Realtek) and plug into the microphone jack on the computer.

I’ve made a patch cable with a mono tip/sleeve 1/4’’phone plug on one end, and a mono tip/sleeve 1/8’’ phone plug on the other end.

I constructed this cable by taking a shielded cable with a molded RCA plug on one end, and soldiered a 1/4’’ plug on the other. Then I put an RCA female jack to 1/8’’ male phone plug adapter on the RCA male end.

Now doing a quick tune-up in a recording session is a breeze.

AP Instrument Tuner
AP Instrument Tuner redux 50%.jpg

Billed as the ‘’Cousin’’ of AP Guitar Tuner, this is basically the same program without the dedicated guitar templates. I also have this in my DAW.

More info here:

http://web.archive.org/web/20020202233155/http://www.audio-phonics.com/moreinstrument.html

Unfortunately it seems AP Instrument Tuner has vanished from the Internet.

SD Card/MP3 File Sorter & Printer
http://vwlowen.co.uk/otherprogs/files.htm
(Scroll down to program download and screenshot)
I mix and master audio on a variety of monitors (8’’, 6’’, and different headphones)
The final listen is on Walkman type and ear bud headphones on a cheap mp3 player (And is usually the most revealing).

This utility is used to set up the file order on such (SD card) devices for desired playback order. It also supports FLAC, OGG and WMA.

From the author John Owen:
‘’If you use Windows Explorer to create an MP3 compilation on an SD Card or your MP3 player, you've probably noticed that the tracks don't play in the same order as they appear in Explorer.

This is because Explorer displays the files in alphabetical order whereas the MP3 player plays them in the order they were saved to the flash card. The latter is more sensible because the tracks are played in the order the original album producer intended.

If you copy a group of files using Explorer, the order they're stored on the flash card is completely unpredictable. Again, this makes it difficult to organize the tracks to play in the order you want them to play in.’’'

With this utility you can set the order when you first transfer the files, or reorder from the device itself.

USB Device Tree Viewer
https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html (Scroll down for screen shots and download)
Final XP Version is 4.6.4
USB Device Tree Viewer is a great utility in so many ways. For instance when ejecting a USB device, if you’ve ever encountered the popup ‘’Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device’’! The device ‘Generic volume’ cannot be stopped right now… and you have closed all files/directories, you might be able to restart explorer.exe and then eject. If you still cant, open USB Device Tree Viewer-> select the offending device and right click-> Restart Port. It is like re-plugging the USB device.

Audioactive Player v2.08
aa-player.gif

Since Cool Edit v1.2a, I’ve had access to FhG Mp3 encoding and decoding which is available in Au with CBR and VBR options.
I got this freeware FhG Mp3 decoder a while ago from the original site and have used it ever since. Compared to LAME decoders it sounds better. I use it as a second playback to hear my authored Mp3's.

v2.08 is the last version I know of. I stream classical music on this program to this day. Basically audioactive freeware became abandonware. If you search the web you can find v2.06c or earlier, and 2.08 with more digging.

I attach a copy here: Audioactive v2.08.zip

Metronome v1.6 by Iwan Mouwen
Metronom redux 80%e.jpg

Sometimes you don’t want to open a DAW program just to practice. But you want to use your studio monitors etc. This little Metronome is handy. It has a tap tempo button and you can make your own sounds as well.

MY NOTE: ''Beep'' setting in menu does not work and no ''Beep.wav is included in the download.
I made 3 Beep.wavs that are in ''Add On Beeps'' Folder.
You could make a Beep.wav (Or any sound you want) in Au:

a) Edit view-> Generate-> Tones select 32 bit Mono 44.1 kHz -> OK.
b) Select A 440 (Default) Preset, duration: 1 Seconds, choose what Bass Frequency you want (e.g. 1200 Hz)-> OK.
c) At beginning of file Generate-> Silence 0.001 Seconds.
d) Cue to 0:00.454 and delete everything after.
e) Go to very end of file-> Zoom in and find the last zero-point crossing and delete everything after.
f)
Option (A)-> Apply dither using plugin, then truncate file (F11 in Au) to 16 bits, OK and save.
Option (B)-> In Au press F11 ''Convert Sample Type'' Menu:
Sample Rate = 44100
Channels = Mono
Bit Depth = 16
Check Enable Dither, Depth 1 bit, p.d.f Triangular and Noise Shaping (44.1KHz), OK, and save.

You can get the program here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080214120436/http://www.oli.tudelft.nl/vvier/v4software/

I attach same with 3 included ‘'Beep’' wavs and the above notes: metronome v1.6.zip

A few more essential utilities coming, then some .xfm plugins, then I’ll be discussing my essential VSTs and how to optimize them, particularly in Adobe Au 3.0.1.

http://audio.rightmark.org/products/rmaa.shtml

Among other things I used this program to test various SRC (Sample Rate Conversion) applications. This program is for testing research and does not actually apply to direct audio editing.

The website has downloads for the latest (2018) v6.4.5 and simpler (2005) v5.5 with PDF manuals for both.

TT Dynamic Range Meter
DR-Meter_redux 65%.jpg

http://web.archive.org/web/20140402114319/http://www.pleasurizemusic.com/
These people were/are committed to the ‘’Loudness Wars’’ where engineers/artists are sacrificing dynamics and sonority for ‘’Louder’’ masters to compete for attention. It’s the listener in the end who is the final judge of whether the music sounds good or not. I feel that the meter is accurate and is a good reference point to making music with better dynamic range. I keep a log on my master’s scores and do try to aim for the meter ‘’Sweet Spot’’ of 14.

NOTES:
This only works on 16 bit, 44.1 kHz wave format (That's OK, you always master a 44.1 version anyway... :))
The VST plugin is just for live metering.
The offline program will give you the DR statistical score.

For the last version 1.4a (With buggy VST plugin):

To get the PDF Manual download v 1.3 (Applicable to v1.4a):
http://web.archive.org/web/20090621...ites/default/files/DR-Manual-V1_3-English.pdf

Version 1.4a Minor bug fixes
- Support of wav-files containing additional data (e.g., marker) added
- Installation folder opened upon successful installation

There is a Foobar2000 component (I have not tested):

I attach here a copy of my custom made ‘’Portable’’ package with working Win VST. Just make a folder and extract. Then transfer the VST to your VST folder: DR-Meter_Portable_wWorking VST.zip

Moffsoft FreeCalc
freecalc_redux 50%.jpg

https://www.moffsoft.com/freecalc.htm

An essential utility for me. For example if I need to attack a frequency range and I want to find the center frequency from where to apply the filter before setting the Q. The tape function is very handy and a ton of other options superior to the standard Windows calculator (calc.exe). I have backed up calc.exe and renamed MoffFreeCalc.exe to calc.exe and placed it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 so my calculator key on my keyboard opens it up.

StripWav 2.0.3 by Timothy J. Weber
screen2redux 80%.gif

http://web.archive.org/web/20220817124211/http://www.lightlink.com/tjweber/StripWav/StripWav.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20120329011852/http://www.lightlink.com/tjweber/StripWav/SW203.exe

From the author:
Rationale
‘’My initial purpose for this program was to remove the summary information placed by
Cakewalk Pro Audio (a sequencer program) into the WAVE files generated by its Export To
Wave command. This extra information is legal according to the definition of the WAVE file format, but causes problems with older programs that assume that everything after the fileheader is sample data. In particular, using Cakewalk's WAVE files with Easy CD Audio (a CD mastering program) results in incorrect calculation of the file length and bursts of static between tracks.
The shareware version has no expiration date, but will show a registration dialog when it is first run, and more often if you strip lots of files.’’

As of Cakewalk 8.3. wav header junk is still included in exported wavs. This is a good tool to use to see if your DAW app is attaching un-needed wav header data. Presumably you would only have to run it once to know for your exports/Save as, on a particular program unless you got a wav file from someone else.

MP3/AAC Direct Cut by Martin Pesch
scr-mp3dc-ligh_Redux 75%t.png

https://mpesch3.de/index.html

This is a great utility and also works on AAC files (.m4a)

From the author:
‘’ mp3DirectCut is a fast and extensive audio editor for encoded MP3 and AAC. Without re-encoding directly cut, crop, split and join your tracks, create fades on MP3 and much more. Direct lossless editing saves encoding time and preserves the audio quality of encoded tracks….’’

The key here is to be able to encode lossy files without re-encoding.

For AAC work you will also need:
libfaad2.dll (32 bit)
https://www.rarewares.org/aac-decoders.php#faad2_dll-win and put it in the program's folder.

For MP3 work you will need:
MP3 ACM codec (Present in Windows)
Or
mpglib.dll
https://mpesch3.de/misc.html

The tutorial page is important:
https://mpesch3.de/tutcrop.html

The download is an .exe file but you can extract with 7-Zip into it’s own directory.
Manual is included in the .exe

SRCDrop v0.6.4 by John33
SRCDrop_redux 75%.jpg

https://www.rarewares.org/others.php#srcdrop

Of course for serious Sample Rate Conversion (SRC) I use FinalCD with Airwindows Ultrasonic filter.

Sometimes you just need a quick quality SRC and don’t want to open your bigger programs. SRCDrop is built on the well-known ‘’SecretRabbitCode’’ (aka libsamplerate) by Eric de Castro Lopo.

Wavosaur
Wavosaur.1.8.0.0.png

https://www.wavosaur.com/

I’m very skittish when adding any VSTs to my Adobe Audition DAW Program. Let’s face it; Adobe Au is finicky with plugins and a bad plugin (VST or DX) can crash the system and you lose all your presets.

As Stated before I use V-B VST ScannerV1 042 to check on a plugin before installing but even before that I call up Wavosaur (it loads super fast) and test the VST plugin in a ‘’Sandbox’’. My Wavosaur folder has a VST folder, and a 16bit-48kHz wav for testing.

I’m using the latest Wavosaur v 1.8.0 and it has a bug in that when you close it you get an error message, which I have never found to be applicable to my use. But then again I do not edit in Wavosaur. All tools are already resident in Adobe Au or 3rd party VSTs in Au. However, v1.8.0 was up scaled from previous versions especially to give more VST functionality.

If you find it too buggy and want to try the previous edition:

Audacium-3.0.4-XP by GrandAdmiralThrawn

audacium-1_003 _redux 75%.JPG

Audacium is a fork of Audacity. v3.0.4.
The version listed here has been modified for Windows XP. Audacity dropped support for windows at v2.1.3
So this is quite a few versions ahead.

I have this on hand because well… ‘’Ya never know’’ especially when I have a VST plugin that won’t play nice with Au but I need to process with it (Which is rare) or if I want to back up an individual plugin's preset setting (.fxp) which Au does NOT support!

Downloads are on GrandAdmiralThrawn’s web page, but he runs his own server from his home. The downloads are very slow and he doesn’t need his bandwidth bills to go up. I recommend getting the downloads from archive(Dot)org. It’ll be faster and won’t negatively affect GrandAdmiralThrawn:

The Last Audacity Mod to run on XP is v2.2.3
of which there are two available:

I believe GrandAdmiralThrawn’s ffmpeg v2.2.2 Mod may work in these Audacity builds. Otherwise you’ll need v2.2.1

ASIO4All by Michael Tippach
Panel_214_Advanced_redux 50%.png

https://asio4all.org

I use the ASIO drivers that come with the sound cards. The bundled drivers are specific to the card. I’d recommend always researching the ASIO driver status of any prospective sound card purchase.

I don’t use ASIO4All and I suppose it would be a last resort OR you might want to use it on your motherboard sound device as a secondary ASIO enabled port.

v2.15 Might run on XP

v2.14 Should run on XP

ClickFix XFM for Adobe Audition by Jeffery Klein
clickfix.gif

https://jdklein.com/clickfix
"ClickFix for Adobe Audition is a click and pop filter plug-in..."

This is an .XFM CoolEdit/Au only plug-in.
I use the (Free) Pro version with unregistered limited function (v3.04).

In addition to restoration of vinyl, I sometimes get a nasty audio abberation from a digital mix overlap.
Zeroing in on this is cumbersome. I have traditionally used the Click/Pop restoration plug-in in Au. It works for me.

One thing you can do with this ClickFix plug-in that you can't do in Au is see ''Keep Only Clicks''.

Let's say you have an anomaly in the sound file that you need to silence.
Locate exactly where it is -> Highlight the offending samples -> Apply ''Keep Only Clicks''
If it shows up, use Au's Invert tool to invert the samples -> copy the processed samples -> Undo invert -> Undo
''Keep Only Clicks''. You should now still have the original highlight. Select Mix Paste (Volume 100) ->
Overlap (Mix) -> OK. You have phase inverted the samples cancelling them out.

I have yet to try ClickFix on a vinyl restoration project but I definitely would compare it against Au's plug-in.

Auroroa XFM Plugins by Angelo Farina
Convolve with Clipboard_redux 50%jpg.jpg

https://www.aurora-plugins.com/index.htm
From The Author:
''Aurora is a suite of plug-ins for Adobe Audition: room acoustical impulse responses can be measured and manipulated, for the recreation of audible, three-dimensional simulations of the acoustical space.''

I have traditionally used the ''Convolve With Clipboard'' (convolv.xfm) plugin to make various types of mono to stereo wavs.(+)

Unfortunately, the link to the example file foli-p12.wav is dead.

If you want to just look at the manual first:
https://www.aurora-plugins.com/download/Aurora43Manual.pdf

There is a discontinued (Last version 3.3) plug-in called Real Time Convolver which seems interesting and applicable. I do not know why it was discontinued.
I attach it here:
Real Time Convolver Aurora v3.3 XFM.zip
The help file is in Italian which I translated and I include the last webpage and the plug-in.

In addition Mr. Farina has done extensive research and has made available for free download a large amount of resources including impulse files, sound files, white papers, and software.
Unfortunately, the Farina websites are no longer active. You'll have to use archive(DOT)org. and some links were never archived.

It can be overwhelming at first, but if you are interested in the processing of sound into 3-Dimensional space, this is a gold mine!

(+)*** Russian Roulette ***
The suite of Aurora plugins is shareware. However, while most shareware programs
expire after a short period, Aurora modules can be used as long as required without
registering them. This was chosen for aiding broken students, or people living in
difficult conditions - for those people even the small amount of money required for
registering Aurora can be a big trouble.
However, when Aurora is unregistered, you are affected by that nasty "Russian Roulette":
with a chance of 1:4, the module will crash, causing the host program to die. Albeit
this is annoying, this behavior does not cause any loss of data, as Audition will
restore all the previously-open files (even those not saved) at the next launch.
Of course, when Aurora is registered, the Russian Roulette will not bother you again.

If you're still interested after that, there are more Farina files here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20170110012449/http://www.ramsete.com/Public/

Based on the program Ramsete which is interesting in inself.

This post is for people whom are interested in writing .XFM plugins. (I am not a coder.)
The supplied .xfm files are VERY BUGGY! I do not recommend using them. All of their functions are available in higher quality VST or DX plugins.

The reason I am posting this is:
1) These files have been lost to the internet. Never archived anywhere.
http://web.archive.org/web/20010516002536/http://www.cyberush.com.ar/rceballos/
2) Anyone who does have an interest in .xfm building might find them useful as examples for study.
3) They do work a little (some better than others).

In other news...
When I started this thread I was posting like a house on fire. I need to cool down and do other things. I'll be posting 1 - 2 times a week. Coming up next are ''My Essential'' non-xfm plugins. IOW VST and yes... DX. Including workarounds I have found with Adobe Au issues and links to (Freeware) plugins; especially ''Double Precision'' which means 64-bit computation inside a 32 bit DAW.

DSP 01

Audio Plugin Pack 64-bit Internal Precision
1666115874_dsound_redux 25%.jpg

This installs as both DX and VST.
This is Abandonware and though quite old, very high quality. These plugins were ahead of their time.
The Parametric EQ (P-EQ) is my default Channel Strip before FX in CoolEdit & Au.
P-EQ adds Gain to individual frequency bands but is only subtractive on the master volume faders which shouldn't be a problem because the only time you'd be volume gaining is in the Final Mastering chain's Compressor, Exciter or Maximizer (or doing a 6.01dB bitshift gain with appropriate plugin/software).... right? :)
Advantages of this plugin are:

° Ability to use proprietary plugin preset saving which is essential in buggy Au preset system.
° Ability to make 64-bit volume envelopes/fades in Au using FX Automation Lanes.
° Ability to make 64-bit pans in Au.
° The Modulation FX & Delay are excellent 64-bit plugins.
° Excellent User Manual/Help files.

The volume envelopes, pans and fades in Au 3.0.1 are done in 32-bit.

64-bit Fade(+):
Applying a 64-bit fade could be worth it for files that will be published:

1) Make a new session named e.g. My Song_FADEOUT.ses and insert your mixdown e.g. My Song.wav on Track 1.

2) Highlight the area where you want the fade to start and end and save cue points of beginning and end.

3) Right click and select "Fade Envelope Across Selection" -> Choose Linear option(+).

4) Insert P-EQ in track 1 FX rack. Set to default (All EQ bands off) and pull Master Volume Faders ALL THE WAY DOWN or punch in -60 dB for both sliders. The volume reading should say -inf dB.

5) Right click on track and select Expand Automation Lanes.

6) In the Automation Lanes "Track" select Insert FX -> Wet/Dry Mix

7) Drag both Automation Lane envelope squares at each end down to bottom. Your FX envelope squares cursor should read: Wet/Dry Mix to 0% which allows full volume pass through of the wav. on Track 1. (Remember plugin is set to -inf dB if Mix is 100%: No Sound).

8) Make a back-up copy of My Song_FADEOUT.ses (Better safe than sorry).

9) Zoom in to the individual samples starting at the first volume envelope square where the fade out begins. Your volume envelope square cursor should read: +0 dB.

10) Create a Wet/Dry Mix FX envelope square that is in line with the first volume envelope square Your cursor should read: Wet/Dry Mix 0%

11) Go to the end volume envelope square. Your volume envelope square cursor should read: -oo dB.

10) Create a Wet/Dry Mix FX envelope square that is in line with the end volume envelope square and drag it up to the top. Your FX cursor should read: Wet/Dry Mix 100%.

Au volume envelope of 0 dB (Start of fade) correlates with FX envelope 0% Wet (0 dB)
Au volume envelope of -oo dB (End of of fade) correlates with FX envelope 100% Wet (-inf dB)

To compare the two fades:
Turn off FX rack --> mixdown.wav This is your 32-bit fadeout
Turn on FX rack -> drag end volume envelope square up to 0 dB -> mixdown(2).wav This is your 64-bit fadeout.

In a Mix, let's say you want to bring the rhythm guitar down during the Lead guitar solo, You can use the above concept to create a 64-bit volume change over the bars instead of a 32-bit.
For a pan, just set the two master (L/R) faders accordingly. e.g. Left 0 dB Right -3 dB.

(+) Unfortunately Adobe Au does not show volume envelope square cursors data in dB AND percentage as it did in Cool Edit allowing making more complex fades possible by matching percentage data. IMO a bad oversight by Adobe.
(Cool Edit v 2.1 fully working is available at vetusware.com, (Link below) don't accidentally get v2.0. With Cool Edit you can use this method for complex volume fades).

I'm going to be posting plugins that I think are essential to any DAW.
They are all free.
They are either unique or in my opinion compatible or superior to commercial alternatives.
They are all compatible with Adobe Au and WinXP (Legacy VST2/DX).
Some may require ''Workarounds'' to function optimally.

But before that, I'll mention an abandonware VST to DX Wrapper application that I use.
The reason I use this is because some VST parameters in Au will ''Jump'' past certain settings numbers and by wrapping the VST to DX you can key in exact parameters on the keyboard or use sliders precisely.
I use the wrapper primarily for Airwindows VST plugins.
I've tried a few wrappers and this one by SpinAudio is IMO the best.

The Caveats:

· Au DX (And VST) preset handling is BUGGY! Always write down your presets.
· The wrapper will only move slider DOWN with keyboard, otherwise use mouse.
· On some VST settings the wrapper will not round the final integer. To remedy, place cursor at the end of the input field i.e. 0.581749 |(<- Cursor) and punch in a "1". Now SpinAudio VST Wrapper: 0.581749 becomes 0.581750.
· DO NOT USE PREVIOUS VERSIONS of This application. If you uninstall it, it will wreck havoc. ONLY USE
vBuild140

I don't need the Wrapper too often but when I do it's great to have.

To get your copy:
vetusware.com

Or I attach a copy here:

VST.DX.Wrapper Setup.exe:
a) Create a folder
b) Download and put into folder:
VST.DX.Wrapper.z01.zip-> Extract to VST.DX.Wrapper.z01
VST.DX.Wrapper.z02.zip-> Extract to VST.DX.Wrapper.z02
c) Download VST.DX.Wrapper.zip and place in same folder
d) Extract VST.DX.Wrapper.zip (You now have full Setup.exe and NFO File)

Now there is an add on which I don't use but since it is mentioned in the NFO I'll add it here:
https://vetusware.com/download/VST SkinRack 1.0/?id=18940
Warning! Do not create a skin on an already wrapped VST! Delete the Wrapped VST and start over from scrtch.
Or... it will wreck havoc.

Installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributables For XP

You're going to want the C++ libraries for XP (Or any O/S). They are needed for many DAW plug-ins as well as many, many other programs.

For XP the following is a step by step process to insure you have all final C++ libraries for XP (32+64bit).

1] Create a folder to work in, then go to:
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/visual-c-redistributable-runtime-package-all-in-one/
->On Left side select ''Show older versions''
->Scroll to August 2020 and select download, make sure next page says ''File name: Visual-C-Runtimes-All-in-One-Aug-2020.zip''
->Select any server and download to your working folder.

2] Extract all files

3] Start Windows Installer Service (otherwise some files will not install)

4] Run install_all.bat
After install is complete, I like to re-boot

You're done. keep this file, If you get any kind of C++ corruption, you'll want to re-install C++ this way. Just run the .bat again. Otherwise you might encounter problems trying it by hand.

Now if you MUST have the FINAL C++ version for XP (vcredist2019_x86.exe v14.28.29213.0 - last version compatible with Windows XP- Later vcredist2019 versions will install but not function correctly.):

You can update with:
32bit
https://download.visualstudio.microsoft.com/download/pr/566435ac-4e1c-434b-b93f-aecc71e8cffc/0D59EC7FDB F05DE813736BF875CEA5C894FFF4769F60E32E87BD48406BBF0A3A/VC_redist.x86.exe

64bit
https://download.visualstudio.micro...8BFF9BD5A69FACBF41B3846D084/VC_redist.x64.exe

Question: Wouldn't the techpowerup.com site have the package with the last XP compatible C++ 2019?
Answer: No, the next package skips over v14.28.29213.0, the Jan 2021 package contains v 14.28.29325.2
The August 2020 c++ v is14.27.29016.0 Which frankly is ''Good Enough''

FYI Microsoft (with rare exception) does not want anyone having access to their older system files. Finding links is A LOT OF WORK!
On MS Forums the ''moderators'' will NOT supply links even when asked for specific versions.
Thankfully their are industrious souls (Like the people at XPforums) who work to find what is needed.
