Access denied

I just finished reloading software after scrubbing the computer. I loaded XP and office professional. Then I accessed the harddrive that I had backed all my files unto. I saw the folder for a few seconds, but because the dell touchpad was active it may have clicked on it a couple of times. I then saw a new folder, one of those files that is created by windows, i.e. 5a9caf65177sakr32496. Then I could not find the folder. Many old backup files and folders are on there but I can not find this one in searches, etc. Anyone have any idea how to recover?
