I've been trying to access a user's folder on a hdd from a different computer. Their laptop stopped working and they have a ton of files they would like to recover. The laptop is from Columbia and so the XP version on it is in Spanish (don't think that should make any difference but I mention it anyhow).

I've connected the SATA laptop drive to an older desktop running XP and can see the drive and the directory tree but many of the folders on the system partition are "greyed out," and when I try to access them it give me the "access denied" message.

I've tried taking ownership of the drive and it seemed to work, i.e. it changed the owner to the administrator user name I'm using on the desktop but I still can't get access to a lot of the folders. I can get access to some of the folders, i.e. the non system folders?

In any case, if anyone could advise me on this I'd be most grateful.
