Windows XP Updates

New member here.

I have three computers. Wife has a Laptop with Windows 7. I have two. One HP with Windows 7, and a older one HP with Windows XP Home. The XP Home is used for business...no internet source.

Here's my problem with the HP with Windows XP. I did a complete system recovery today and when all is finish I couldn't get anywhere. I tried to download the "old" Windows XP updates, as I read on the internet that one still could download the (old) updates prior to April 8, 2014. I get a script error that won't stop, and when I click to end it, it shuts down my Windows Internet Browser. Also, I cannot get into Microsoft websites to get any SP1,2, or 3 downloads.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get back the "Old" Microsoft Updates and any others pertaining to XP?

Thanks in advance.

You might have to download from a working pc, and carry over to the xp,
also do you have any service packs installed???

Before you install SP3 read this article…
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
…and if your PC is an HP Pavilion, Presario or Media Center and has an AMD processor you need to install this patch before installing SP3…
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-60484-2
…to find out if you have an AMD processor...
• Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and hit the Pause Break key
• Your processor type is shown in the Computer: section
Then install SP3 by downloading and running from...
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24
…you can ignore the text that says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.
Reboot twice after installing.

=============

then you will need to install ie8:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx

NOTE: install sp3 first then ie8 reboot twice after each.

if you have 64 bit you cannot install sp3, stop at sp2

if you have xp embedded version you cannot install sp3.

then from here you want to insure you have the latest Windows update agent installed.

this is for .net 2, service pack

Thanks Elizabeth23, I do have a AMD 2.00 ghz processor on my HP 775e computer. I have the computer working showing the Windows XP Home screen, and when I click on Internet Explorer it shows, but that is as far I can go as I get a Internet Explorer error that says I have encountered a problem and needs to close. When I click on the "close" panel the computer shut down my Windows Explorer browser. I have service pack 1, as that came with the XP home OS. I don't have SP2 or SP3. I cannot get into Microsoft website to get any downloads.

This afternoon I found a computer supplier that has a SP2 and SP3 on a CD. I ordered one hoping this will get me into the area where I can download the "Old" Window Updates before April 8, 2014.

I will check into the links you have shown in your reply. Maybe they will help.

Thanks again.

it will not matter if 8 april is here or not you will still be able to use windows updates, since you have sp 1, then you will have to download and install sp2, before you do 3.

You can download these on any computer and save to a flash drive and then take the flash drive to the xp pc and install

reply 2: NOTE

you should install an antivirus before you connect to the internet,

and when you install your drivers the Chipset must be installed first!!

Elizabeth, it would be wonderful if I could get on the Internet, but, it is impossible as the Internet Explorer Script Error window pops up and each time I try to log on. When I click the "close" script error this shuts down the computer.

The HP 775e system recovery CD(s) six total has the drivers included within. I think Microsoft has made a bug to prevent anyone from using XP when they make a system recovery on their computer. I have a original hard drive that came with the machine that has XP and all the extra software. I will remove this hard drive in the PC and install the original one to see what goes. The original hard drive has only 80GB, whereas this one has 120GBs.

BTW. This computer will not except the USB Flash drive that I used to get the HP link you provided. Must be all due to the way the SP2 and SP3 are mot installed now.

Will report back on what happens.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bph08229.pdf

starting at page 89

this is the manual for your pc, there was a recovery partition on the original hdd.

there is nothing about transferring the recovery partition to discs

where did you get the recovery discs??

if you still have your original hdd and the recovery partition is still there, then recover to the old hdd, and then clone your drive to the 120gb drive.

one other question, you can boot to windows, just not get on the internet??

also please give me the EXACT script error.

I can boot to windows.. and it shows all the software and any others items installed. It also shows that I have MSN (came with the PC) as my browser, which I always change to Yahoo . It's getting on the internet to download any HP drivers or Microsoft downloads.
And from what I understand I must have Internet Explorer 8 to run, and Microsoft has stop allowing any downloads on that version. Shortly, I'm going to go in a storage room and find the original HP #D7242F 80gb 7200rpm hard drive to re-install on this computer. Will see what happens.

I have succeeded in getting it all back as normal....The links you supplied I burned to a disc and use the two....SP2 and SP3 to get the PC to operate has before. I certainly couldn't have done all this without your help. Your guiding made it possible to go for the information to make the recovery. I thank you for all this. Good luck to you when you have others that may need your great help.

microsoft will suffer for not supporting the Windows XP

The strategic decision of ceasing the support of windows xp, will be a disaster for microsoft.
And they deserve it.
Because their lawyal 500 mio customers, means nothing to them.
They only care how to buy bigger and bigger cruizing boats.

They decided to abandon the XP, without offering a replacement (windows 7 and windows 8 are not running with the hardware)

So, any investment in software and in hardware, has been made by more than 500 mio customers, is to be burned.

Alternatives ?

A lot. Ubuntu and Mac OS will be the most obvious.
So, we will loose only our software investment, since we will keep the hardware.

But, the good thing is that we will move away from Microsoft.
Which seems a good choice for both, Microsoft and ourselves.

Microsoft is not a good investment anymore.
