Upon shutting down windows downloaded 10 updates. I am in a stuck or freeze on update #3 for 4 hrs. Screen gives warning not to turn off or unplug. I've tried ctr-alt-delete with no result. Need assistance or input. What will happen if I do a hard shutdown without all updates being installed. Will this cause harm?

that seems excessive, seems a 50/50 proposition. I would do a hard shutdown and then immediately do a checkdisk with the /r parameter, run it at least twice:
