Will this work? (Steam)

So as you may have known, Windows is going crazy with spyware these days. That is why I moved 90% of my games to Ubuntu, either by Steam or by hand.
However, since this is Ubuntu, Half-Life Source has frozen every time I tried to run it. No error messages. That is why I want to run it on Windows XP.
My question is - will it work without Steam on Windows XP? Have any of you tried something similar?

Officially the Steam app requires Windows 64-bit or newer.
Operating System: Steam primarily supports Windows 10 and later versions, but can also run on Windows XP, Vista, and 7/8. Steam will only support Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024.

However, I read about some people finding workaround as discussed in the following:

How to Run the latest version of Steam on Windows XP-8.1 in 2025

If I were you and wanted to run Steam then I would install Windows 10 64-bit. You can buy a key for it pretty cheaply online.

The best way to avoid spyware is to avoid dodgy sites. As a backup you need real-time anti-virus software. Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender which is pretty good having built-in real-time protection. If you want something else you have to pay for it to get the same real-time protection.

I had a couple computers with Windows XP around just in case I wanted to run old software or games. I retired them earlier this year. I rarely used them anymore so it was not worth bothering with them. I still have computers with Windows 7, 10 & 11. I will gradually retire the computers with Windows 7. By the end of this I will have three computer with Windows 11 with the Windows 10 computers being secondary.

BTW, my antivirus software is really good about blocking viruses and malware. It has been at least 15 years since any of my computers was infected.

I appreciate your help. I managed to port over Half-Life to XP for a test but that didn't work, so I coded a small .sh script that set a couple options the right way and now it works.

The best way to avoid spyware is to not use modern Windows versions (10 and 11). I do it like this - games with invasive anticheats like Hell Let Loose or Halo Infinite stay on Windows, rest of games and any other programs stays on Ubuntu. Since Windows 11 now screenshots everything you do every couple of seconds, destroys Linux distros if they are on dual boot, pushes copilot in your face... if I ever come back to Windows, it will be Windows 7 or older.

If you have so many computers, why not try Ubuntu out? It is really user friendly - even my grandma uses it since I installed it for her on a new laptop - her old Windows 7 was SO sloggy that even she noticed it!

If you like using Windows 10 or 11, you do you. Not saying you're somehow worse if you use it. I just think that Microsoft has gone overboard with spyware...

Yes, avoid 10-11 they are BUILT as spyware... If you use offline & never hook the internet you should be fine... often when they are 'updating' they are copying your files, this is why the updates take so long but they can also do this when the machine is completely off there will be no lights or sound to alert anyone... Screenshots yup but also the webcam is taking infared pics every so often... The RFB channel on YT he posted a video where he had taped over the cam but after a week it had burnt it's way through the tape...

Peeps say 'Don't use XP on the internet there are SERIOUS security issues!!!'... this is a lie being parroted, the truth is the other way around... I use XP right now & for 22 years, no problems, Wife uses windows 10, many issues always pop up...

I guess this needs updated to include windoze 11-

I 100% agree with you and I love this meme! Even in my article I outlined how once you secure yourself from known XP threats, the chances of a knew exploit coming to the OS are near to impossible or will not have widespread consequences. Windows 10 is the hottest for hacking right now, since support is ending in October. Who cares about "support" from a big corporation who sees consumers as a lever to earn money? Better depend on some open-source programmers or sometimes even crackers who use money as a lever for consumer good, wanting nothing in return.

Windows 11 could be the imperial probe droid from Star Wars, as it has a massive camera and a lot of "tentacles" with other sensors...

Imperial Probe Droid... That works!... If one wants to get down to the basics you have to ask people "Where's the internet?" I have had some of what I had surmised as smart people say "the internet is everywhere!"... no, NO... there's an actual cabling to it... Noting how STABLE it is...

I am an inactive HAM operator I'm sure you know what that is but many probably not, got my 'general' class license as a sophomore in 1977 & used to go service local 2 meter repeater with tech guy who was high up at local cable co... So I was active up through like 1987 & never EVER did i hear of an 'internet' being cabled or ships running 1,000's of miles of cable through marianna trench (36,000 feet or more depth) or any other...

I woulda been one of the first to hear... All-of-a-sudden in the mid-90s...BOING! here's the internet... Known as the World Wide Web which is direct reference to a spider's web, a spider draws it's prey INTO it's web...

It's amazing that there are so many maps of sea cables since nobody is going deep sea diving to see that they aren't there but once you hit land the cables are no longer shown...

I watched a video about 6 years ago that was supposed to be about cabling undersea for the internet showing 'boosters' every so often & then the cables running up onto the BEACH!...what?...WHAT?!... Lots of ridiculous stuff on that video, I challenged the company on 3 different occasions but never got a response...

The fact is that if there were all these undersea cables then the first thing that would happen when a cyclone or tsunami comes through is rip them all up like overcooked pasta which would take decades to fix...

What about countries that are landlocked?... What does happen when it goes through an unfriendly country? They don't 'CHOP it?'...

This is easily solved if you know & realize that if you have high enough clearance you can travel the entire world underground without ever having to come up... Sure your line goes to a pole or buried cable to the ISP but they tap into a trunk that comes from underground tunnel o station running to the surface & it was always fiber but they could not give people fiber in the beginning they had to follow the low tech to avoid raised eyebrows...

I am not saying one can't run cables... Across strait of gibralter or something but still it is not necessary...

It is entertaining how the wiki-shite & similar will tell you about the beginning's of the net how this university connected to that university say 2,000 miles away but no mention of how it was cabled...

This info changes as well I read years ago it said that yes, it was a DARPA thing but they just ran their own 'phone lines & poles'... what?...WHAT?... Advanced research top secret but all you gotta do is climb a pole & tap-in?

So YES, OS are getting to be more efficient spyware but that's what the internet was given for... To SPY on everyone, this is why in the past web logging was very much encouraged, 'Just say whatever comes to mind'... then fecesbook now put all ur pictures online, shoot forget that just post videos... Everything you do on the net is recorded even this>>>

Nobody cares about undersea cables unless you're a suspicious russian or Chinese vessel on the Baltic Sea and randomly decide to drop your anchor right where the cable begins... total accident...
I am totally aware this is being logged. Glad scummysoft or scoogle are not logging this information though. What a long and thoughtful post btw

OH!... I have personal experience that would make most soil themselves, it sure made me open my eyes only to see most out there shut but it's too spicy for the internet, most would think I'm telling a tall story anyway...

Sorry to derail the topic in the 'Off Topic' sector... I will run away now>>>

Yes I have that comic downloaded too LOL, by the way, my win10AME iso has never messed with a dualboot, maybe they removed the nanny? but I haven't tested it with a linux...

So what I got from your post, is that you think underseas cables are BS, which is interesting, theories don't scare me, but what do you think is really going on? Seriously 100% curiosity, not condemning.

Same with the meme. Microsoft is actively fighting Linux, even via propaganda (like terminal memes). Also, Windows Fastboot sometimes froze my computer and I had to restart, the lag came even without Linux on dualboot.

Don't worry, you can tell this story here, mostly. I saw some guy spreading conspiracy theories here and he isn't gone, so as long as you keep it family-friendly, they shouldn't take it down.

These days 'conspiracy theories' are becoming fact & mainstream & 'edjacation' are becoming fiction... After all no matter where you 'graduate' or get your 'degree' (both freemasonic terms) you still gotta wear that 'cap-n-gown' with the square freemasons mortar board as your cap thus symbolizing your own 'moulding of the mind' that has transpired... Simpsons pretty much tell it all, no not prediction, they are telling you....

No my account is not really 'family-friendly', a bit jarring for here & would violate belief systems even though it may not be deleted... It was an account of being in the wrong place at the right time....

When the war starts do not trust anything the govt asks you to do... Looks like riots a good way to get troops prepositioned for lockdowns when it starts...

What's going on? Well, alotta lies that's for sure... On the undersea cables there's not a shred of evidence they are there but using 'deduction' I attest they are not for reasons that I brought forth... Shoot there would be crews out there for decades running-fixing cables yet you hear what about it?...Crickets Yet there's tunnels underneath your feet all over even some that are fairly public like Carthage, MS you can even search that on YT... The govt does not want you to 'hoard food' yet they been doing it for decades in the tunnels of Carthage, MS...

You see, since my 'encounter' back in 1994 I have had my eyes opened & have done alot of research so my 'reality' you would consider 'crazy' so it is not in my best interests to divulge... That's all I am gonna say on it... Thanks all you for not going 'native'... save it up, think about it, do research...

I should have been more direct, how do you think different continents are internet-connected, if not underwater cables? We know it's not satellite, there wouldn't be enough capacity and way too much latency. It's not radio waves, too far, often not line of site, and again too much latency.
