It's telling you it has a networking connection. Generally, if you double click it, it opens networking connections, which will list that as well as others.

If it is redundant, you can usually get rid of it by right clicking on the corresponding icon on Networking connections, selecting properties and removing the tick next to a box saying something like, show an icon in the Notification bar....

if that is the lan connection icon it is different than the one on my pc

================

you can use Autoruns to see what is running on startup, those are the icons that will show up in the system tray.

=================

I would also scan your system

what is your current antivirus??

do the following please:

Download, install, update and do full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes Free (MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

Remove all found, reboot, and run again until scans run clean, these can be removed afterwards if you so choose. Run scans one at a time, please.

post back with results

True Elizabeth, but there are a number of different ones.

It may be possible to identify it in startup, but the only way to be sure is to click on it and see what happens. If a nasty were good enough to already be in the notification bar, it's hardly going to openly identify itself.

To be there means what created it is already installed, so clicking, even if it is some sort of nasty, won't make things any worse. But I tend to believe it will simply open the Networking Connections Pane.
