MOZILLA BETRAYED US ALL!!!

Writing this on Librewolf browser, I regret that I haven't discovered the browser earlier. It uses DuckDuckGo and blocks cookies by default, also doesn't steal date UNLIKE FIREFOX.

Yes, Firefox. The browser that until recently was a balance between privacy and user convenience. The same browser, that was the default on many Linux distributions, like Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora Linux.

Itself being a fork of Chrome (that initially didn't steal data), it has been forked many times into browsers like Pale Moon and Librewolf. Now, these developers will need to remove all the spyware features from the browser once beloved by privacy-conscious users in order to fork it.

It is a shame to see how corporate greed can turn successful software projects into what is basically a Trojan (malware type). Yes, Google Chrome is like a Trojan, sending your data to servers, in this case, controlled by Google, itself controlled by Alphabet Inc. The difference between what is most commonly called a Trojan is that the servers aren't controlled by some random hacker. Arguably, Google is worse than a hacker, since the hacker will not be able to sell the data to as many agencies as Google and it is easier to prevent the hacker from future harm.

TLDR: Discovering that Mozilla will now sell data from Firefox ruined my day. Once I got home, I booted up the computer and migrated to Librewolf. Most of you won't have the problem, since you already use Supermium or Pale Moon on your Windows XPs. God save you if you use Internet Explorer.

A browser that I told all of my friends to migrate to from Google Chrome has just become the same as Chrome itself.
Puppy Linux already removed Firefox and replaced it with Pale Moon. Good job to them!

This left me wondering - how many more software projects will become spyware? Will my projects become spyware in the future? I hope I will look back and see how much disappointment we have gotten in such times if I ever think of monetizing anyone's privacy.
One day we will know...

In the IE days Firefox peaked out at 70% was it? of the market. Now they're something like 2.5%. Desperate times, desperate measures? Not saying I agree with it, just saying not surprised :)

I've played around with fingerprint blocking and obfiscuation (and location mocking), but without fingerprinting and cookies most all website logins won't work, so what's the point? These days I simply reduce my online activity, as the web is such a cesspool now. What a crying shame, after what was globally built up in the 2000's.

That is why I have seperate browser for Google services, like YouTube. I don't want big corpo to get all my data, they can only know which other Google stuff I use. Still data but not as valuable. For convenience, I will always be logged in on YouTube on Pale Moon. This is what the company behind this forum, XenForo Ltd., say about data selling:

"Provide a safe space

You are the master of your own data.

Your customers will be reassured that their information is not being sold off to big tech."
This is a great quote and if it is true, it makes XenForo a great company.
Yet the worst software is the one you pay for and it still extracts your data, like Call of Duty games or Easy Anticheat. The latter is kernel-based, so effectively a rootkit. While the game is on, it doesn't allow you to run any scripts in any language, Java or Python - I wanted to compile my big Java project while playing, but nah.
"Wish we could turn back time to the good old days" and have services sold for money or completely free and non-profit, especially software, and then not have it be spyware.
Waiting for the day mouse and keyboard drivers become spyware, or has it already come?
At least the big companies use a bit of their funds to advance technology. The only thing that can justify their actions.

I use the internet for this forum, YouTube Studio (my own hobby channel - seperate browser due to cookies), Github (coding) and temporarily a few university sites. That means that apart from YouTube Studio, none of these sites nag me for cookies. Here is Github's stance:

"In 2020, GitHub removed all non-essential cookies, including third-party tracking and analytics cookies, from its main site and nearly all subdomains. This move eliminated the need for cookie consent banners and enhanced user privacy by preventing third-party tracking and behavioral advertising on GitHub.com. GitHub explicitly states that it does not use cookies to display ads or track users across other sites.

However, starting September 2022, GitHub introduced non-essential cookies on certain marketing subdomains (e.g., resources.github.com) to gather analytics and personalize content and ads for enterprise users. These non-essential cookies are used for marketing purposes and may involve some level of tracking on those specific marketing pages, but not on the main GitHub.com site."

I use github.com, so I'm fine.

...These days I simply reduce my online activity, as the web is such a cesspool now...
Agreed one-thousand percent. I'm now starting to get out of the house more and walk and feel the wind in my (receding) hair.

One a side note: You never did reply to my PM from *another* forum - just wanted to let you know I did reply to your message when this forum was down. I just don't use this forum very often anymore, I limit to only 2 forums now (1 tech forum and 1 mental health forum)

Be well,

Sal

Well I tried, Sal!

So :p lol!
I was like... do I smell or something?
LMAO

Well ... one good thing about communicating with someone on the internet is even if they do smell (I'm sure you do not - I DO smell - Just kidding) I could not tell. Ha!

OK - here is what (I think) happened.

You send me a DM on *another forum* when you weren't able to access this forum. I replied right away with a screen shot of this forum that I was able to access it on a proxy because it was according to clippy not accessible from the USA for a little bit. That reply of mine sat in my outbox for 2 days and it showed up as unopened/unread so I just deleted it and saw you posting here again and all was fine.

You're a nice fella and I never forget that. One time way WAY back you even offered to send me a hard drive as a gift and I politely declined because I'm not allowed to accept gifts from somebody I don't know in my housing community.

Please bare in mind: I'm autistic and sometimes my mind in muddled. All is ok and I just send you another DM over *there*.

I'm glad you have a good sense of humor and glad you are back in business here posting again. Yes it can be unsettling when a forum goes down because you wonder 'was it something I did wrong' ... I've been there too.

Anywho...

Think nothing of it and enjoy the rest of your week.

Sincerely Yours,

Salvatore :) :)

PS: Sorry for going off topic and perhaps @ClippyBeer can move our postings to this thread. As I say; I really don't use this very often anymore.

So I requested that clippy move these [off-topic] postings over the other thread [site went down], but it would seem that request was not granted; so my apology for taking your thread off-topc, @Martingonn :(

So back to regularly scheduled programing of how "mozilla-betrayed-us-all"

I do agree btw and I only use Mypal (from which I'm posting this message), Hydra, and Lun3r now (all FF forks). If I (absolutely) have to I'll fire up Chrome; but I'd just rather avoid sites that require chrome altogether. For the record, I do trust Arctic Foxie 360 Chrome more than I'd EVER trust any other Chrome (spyware) knockoff.

Best Regards

PS: Here are a few good sites to test out your ad blocking capabilities.

Thank you for the tools that you have given out here! No worries about getting off-topic, glad you guys had a chat! Will test these out. Are you using some kind of linux-like theme for windows xp or are you using a different windows altogether?

You're very welcome and I'd love to hear of people that also achieve 100% ad blocking and tracking with whatever you use for an extension.

I promise I will reply in regards to my system - yes this is genuine XP in classic theme and I just have my settings to match the browser's shapes and sizes. Yep ... I certainly have OCD ... everything has to match up almost totally on my computers. I'm shocked the hard drives on my computers are even still working (beyond me because they are VERY old). I also use https://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/VistaMizer.shtml

Anyways...

Please let me know if you'd like to know more and I'm also glad I chatted with clever screen name and they said you are cool so that is good.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Sal :)

When I use Microsoft Word on the web (no install, no offline spyware dear Microsoft) I get the icon of ">1k" - it has over 1400 trackers. WinXP forums has 3 (one being Google's) and Medium has 10 trackers. I knew something was up with that theme! That's the spirit, taking what you like on another OS and having it on XP! As an extension I use uBlock Origin. I could have used Tor, but I use LibreWolf browser (since Mozilla has become Google in terms of data), but Tor is slow and I keep it reserved for financing, since it is hard to hack and since it uses Tor, no one can steal the packets. With a trusted node, almost perfect.

Wow you're brave, I'm afraid of TOR so I've only used it a hand full of times. But how can you be certain you have a trusted exit node?

I try to find tor equivalents for websites, and if I can't, I only use encrypted protocols (HTTPS, SSH, TLS) when I'm browsing. Also, I use a webtunnel so that my ISP doesn't get flagged with me using tor, as some ISPs are really cautious of tor.

Ok I'll be sure the check out https://blog.torproject.org/introducing-webtunnel-evading-censorship-by-hiding-in-plain-sight/

Honestly, that looks a little (more than a little) over my head; but I'll check it out should I use TOR.

Thank you :)

Ok ... I did read that and they bill it as a way to avoid censorship in highly censored areas - luckily I do not - but I see that would be helpful when using TOR without the ISP knowing. Very nice! I change my dns away from my ISP on my router; but that's about it. I also keep websockets disabled on all my browsers.

From the article:

"It works by wrapping the payload connection into a WebSocket-like HTTPS connection, appearing to network observers as an ordinary HTTPS (WebSocket) connection. "

network.websocket.enabled;false
network.websocket.max-connections;0
network.websocket.max-message-size;0
network.websocket.timeout.close;0
network.websocket.timeout.open;0
network.websocket.timeout.ping.response;0

I keep my browser VERY VERY tight and I'd be happy to share my user.js with anybody here ... its a complication of betterfox and arkenfox along with my personal preferred settings (took me months and months to compile).

This is my personal user.js (use at your own risk - of course) for Mypal68.

Below is my preferred spoof for Mypal 68 and Hydra and Lun3r.

user_pref("general.buildID.override", "20100101");
user_pref("general.oscpu.override", "Windows NT 10.0");
user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win32; x86; rv:138.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/138.0");
user_pref("general.useragent.override.youtube.com", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:138.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/138.0");

Again, once you get my user.js you'd need to load it with your profile and once the changes are made to the prefs.js file (which will automatically do) you can delete the user.js after you close the browser. For now: read over some of the settings I have set to make it as private as possible; its very lengthy.

I disable webgl but I do leave dom storage on but you can always try with it off and if a site fights you, you would always temporally enable it.

webgl.disabled;true
dom.storage.enabled;true

Enjoy :)

PS: AS tight as I keep my browser; I also expect that some sites might not work properly being so tightened and strict, but most sites do work fine.

EDIT: Sorry about the multiple edits - needed to correct mistakes and add more info LOL..........

No worries! Will play around with modifying the file. I use YouTube Studio in a completely broken state, as I use it on Pale Moon along with other trash like Microsoft's Office 365 that I am forced to use.

Yeah, sometimes I need to correct my mistakes on rough days like yesterday. Yeah, create a new profile to try out the user.js and see without messing around with your current profile.

Believe it or not, youtube plays pretty well on Mypal68 with my user.js and Arctic Foxie 360 Chrome. I used to use office (office 2000) but its very old now so I just stick with wordpad and notepad; but only so much you can do, of course with them on XP - Only so much you can do with XP anyway haha......

Yes, technically (I guess) I use pale moon because Lun3r is a fork of Pale Moon and Hydra is a fork of basilisk.

I hope everybody reading is doing well on this Tuesday. :)

YouTube Studio in Pale Moon has some outlines broken and is a bit slow, but it works well for simply viewing videos.

Also https://adblock.turtlecute.org/

This is another good site to test out your ad blocker. You should always be at least able to get to 97% on that one.
