I Hate 'rtf' Files!

My newly built computer (XP-Pro, 'natch) is making any newly created text file (.doc - .txt) when saved as an rtf file. (not notepad, but I dont like its font). No matter what I do, I'm only allowed to save them as rtf. If I change 'save as' to txt or doc (unicode, ms dos, simple text) the unsaved file simply vanishes, 'all is lost'.

Using the same actual XP install disk as before.

Any ideas??
